Cindy,

Thanks for the advice. I haven't heard of the TARA device. Is it

similar to the C+ and Cormet? When I asked him about the BHR he drew

me a scetch of it and was knowledgable in the resurfacing procedure.

I think he has done " resurfacing " , but only femoral. If he is an

expert at THR, would it be that risky to perform resurfacing for a C+

or Cormet device? I'm just a naive hip pain sufferer looking for

options that would be covered by my health insurance. I know that if

I were to go elsewhere, like to Dr. Boyd or the other recommended

surgeons in the country, I would be paying out of pocket and it looks

like big bucks. I checked the website and it lists surgeons

that do the C+, but how do I know how good they are at " installing "

the device? Do you know of any ways to research their track record?

I would like to have something done in June, so that I could recover

by for the next school year. I'm a high school counselor. Thanks

for your information.

Greg,

I based my surgeon decision on references and the number of

resurfacings the surgeon has performed. You certainly don't want to

be among the first candidates if you have the resources to avoid

it. The resurfacing surgery is more difficult to perform on the

acetabulum side than a THR as the neck and head are not cut off,

thus providing less room for surgeon to operate (explanation from

the first OS I saw). I chose Dr. Gross in S.C. as he had excellent

recommendations and had performed over 150 when I first started

looking and 240 by the time I had my surgery.

As for when to have the surgery, that's a personal decision. For me

it was pain and not being able to be active for 18 mos. (some have

gone for much longer).

Hope that helps,

Fred

PS so far my results exceed my expectations. I couldn't be happier

with my decisions.
