Guest guest
Long term use of NSAIDS has been shown to cause more rapid deterioration of the bone. Several studies are out, indomethacin is a real culprit. That is why it is used to prevent heterotopic bon growth around the prosthesis after surgery. Rock climbin' Jude LBHR De Smet 09/11/02 Re: WHY indomethacin to prevent bone overgrowth???? Regarding drugs, I've a question/concern. Both my osteopath and physical therapist recommend using an antiinflammatory such as Vioxx right now. I am progressing slowly (three months since surgery). There are two reasons for their recommendation: 1) to access whether the pain I experience is indeed inflammatory in nature, and not necessarily emanating out of the hip joint itself; and 2) to give me more flexibility while performing some of my exercises. I've read that certain antiinflammatories are frowned upon by certain doctors post-surgery, although they did give me Vioxx while I was still in the hospital. Does anyone have experience with Vioxx this far down the path after surgery? Thanks! Guest guest
Hi Jude, I know you are doing great as I am. I'm playing lots of tennis and moving well and fast on the court. I'm afraid to take anti-inflammatories because of the bone deterioration issue, but how does aspirin, naprosen, ibuprofen, compare to indomethacin? I do get aches and pains in the elbow, wrist, and knees (tendons mostly) and wonder if it's OK to take them a few times a week. I've heard that untreated inflammation can lead to more severe injury. Is ice the best and safest of all remedies? Thanks and take care, Saeed bilateral instantaneous w/ Dr. DeSmet, 7-2-

Guest guest
Vioxx is also a II inhibitor. Studies indicate that they also contribute to bone deterioration. Jude Re: WHY indomethacin to prevent bone overgrowth???? Hi Lari, Try Bextra. It is a -2 inhibitor NSAID and has less gastrointestinal side affects than -1 inhibitors like ibuprofen. It provides great pain relief now and I will use it until I get my right hip resurfaced in July. It is taken at 20mg/day. Try it you might like it. Guest guest
Anyone know anything about Bextra? Seems to be the new antiinflammatory being recommended. Maureen
Guest guest
Maureen; I tried bextra for a month, but it didn't to the trick for me.. I am back to vioxx, which seems to do a better job for me. But I know people who have a great results with it & who say that it was easier on their stomach than vioxx or celebrex.. Good Luck Glen -- Re: Re: WHY indomethacin to prevent bone overgrowth???? Guest guest
I had taken Indomethacin off and on for several years prior to a resurf, to reduce inflammation. It has some side effects, like danger of stomach bleeding, and I had sort of dizzy spells, so gave it up as a bad job. Dr De Smet prescribed it for about 3 weeks after surgery, to prevent unwanted bone growth (ossification?), which surprised me, as I hadn't realized it was used for that purpose as well as to reduce inflammation of joints. However, it was only for the 3 weeks, and so it seemed well worth it. Sharry Re: Re: WHY indomethacin to prevent bone overgrowth???? Anyone know anything about Bextra?
