-I am from montreal and I am seeing Dr. on thursday about the

new procedure. I am 51 and if I am a candidate, I will go for it.

Walking is very hard for me now.

both my husband and I have been resurfed - we went to Belgium in

October of 02 for the BHR. There are a number of doctors in

Vancouver who do the procedure but oh those waitlists.... As for our

experience - nothing short of wonderful - no limitations and we were

back on the ice at 6 weeks post op. I now skate 6 days a week

(sometimes twice a day) and ballroom dance another 2-3 days. No

problem at all other than I never get housework done, although

apparently I now have the physical capability again!!!!

Happy to oblige with any information we can help you with - also check

the archives here, the files and links sections too.

There is a very good surgeon in Ottawa - Dr Kim - he's at Ottawa General

Hospital. He also has a colleague who does resurfs. One gal on this site had a

bilat done by him and was thrilled with the results.

Hello brimer47,

l'm from Montreal too. let me give a short summary. l'm 48 and lt was

diagnosed by a physiatrist that l had severe bilateral hip

oesteoarthritis. He sentenced to walk with at least one cane for the

remaining of my days l had to insist over and over to be refered for

an orthopaedist. l had a left hip resurfacing 8 months ago. it was

done at Sacre Coeur Hospital which has the Western Quebec

Traumatology Center which is known to host the best orthopaedists in

town. The surgery was done by s-Yves Laflamme. He's been doing

resurfacing since 1998 and had not encountered early failure. He also

heads an Eastern Canadian follow up study.

My physiatrist, in fact, had refered me to his father who had

pioneered resurfacing in Montreal in the early 80'. He had,

however,to put an end to it due early failures and nearly ruined his

career. He refered my case to his son who reintroduced resurfacing in

town in 1998.

l met Dr Laflamme January 17 and l was resurfaced september

8th. The waiting was 8 months which is certainly not bad if we

consider the summer holidays and the fact that requested the presence

of other specialists also involved in resurfacing.

Where to go for rehabilitation in Montreal? As for rehabilitation, l

was offered to go to a rehabilitation center for a short time or to

do the rehabilitation on my own. l choosed to do my physio at the

hospital l worked because l had a dirrect access.

l made a mistake. lt took 2 weeks before l began my physio

because l had to see the physiatrist before any treatment. l called

the CLSC for help but any help is restricted to senior citizens.

However it is possible to have an admission in a rehabilitation

center before being discharged from the hospital. l should have chose

to go to a rehabilitation center first till my physio treatments were

available.

Personal rehabilitation orientation? The physiatrist suggested that l

undergo firefighter rehabilitation approach because l work in a

psychiatric deparment where agressions are common. l must be able to

imobilize people in a safely manner for my and their own security. l

went for physio treatment every morning from 9:00 to 11:30 and

repeated the same exercise after supper. l had to take a rest in the

afternoon for the first two weeks. Afterward, l did the same exercise

at home in the afternoon. l did that for 4 months till the therapist

could attest that l was able to walk without a cane safely for 30

minutes. l kept doing my exercises twice a day and l joined a senior

walking club, then l joined a fitness center and l worked out till l

have no physical restriction other than impact sports. This took an

additional 4 months of training till l reach the condition to be

elegible to get back to work which was 2 weeks ago.

My Os confirmed that the x-rays show that my right hip needs

resurfacing too. l'm confident that the success of the surgery and

the reabilitation of my right hip is also within reach.

Brimer47 l hope that the condition of your hip is within reach of

resurfacing. You are going to have to fight the most you can to have

access for your physical therapy and your rehabilitation.
