Guest guest
count them. without a live patient work on the premise that the pvc's are perfussing. ________________________________ To: texasems-l Sent: Mon, June 6, 2011 10:02:12 PM Subject: PVC's  Ok I am just gonna kick the apple cart over. I am currently enrolled in medic school and we are working on Cardiac (yuck yuck) and are about to start taking megacode tests. My question to yall out there is for the sake of the class and the 6 second strip that is provided to us to read do you or do you not count PVC's as part of your rate? I know that " the book " says that not all PVC's profuse but I do not have a " live " pt there to feel the pulse rate to tell if it is profusing or not. I know that in the 5 questions you ask when you read a strip they are asking for the heart rate not the pulse rate so I know that a PVC is not counted in the pulse rate. I need to know for National Registry standards do I or do I not count the PVC's. Any and all help on this matter is greatly appreciated. Thanks for all your help ahead of time. Guest guest
As a general principle, count PVCs for your rate calculation. If you do not, it would cause, say a sinus rhythm at 80 with bigeminy pvcs to be calculated at a rate of 40 if you did not count the pvcs, which would be incorrect... PVCs will cause the ventricles to contract, which will generate a pulse under normal circumstances... it will not necessarily be a strong pulse to to the lack of atrial kick, but generally, a pulse nonetheless.
