Guest guest
Does anyone run with a protocol for the artificial marijuana K2. I've run a few calls, were Pts are hypertensive, tachycardic, and nauseous. Any thoughts? Romy son
Guest guest
Can k2 even produce a medical emergency, in and of itself? We're dealing with a drug that hasn't been really studied in humans, and which may be made up of many different combinations. All I've heard is that it may lead to an increased incidence of agitation and vomiting than marijuana. I've also heard it can cause hallucinations, but haven't even heard any anecdotal evidence of that - only hearsay. I know it was indicated in the shooting suicide of an Iowa teenager, but I'm not sure of the kids history and don't think that can be completely blamed on the substance. Guest guest
The chemical compounds sprayed on the substance burned trigger sever hypertension and tachycardia. That could cause cardiac events or stokes. Yes it's real I'm asking because I've run on a couple of K2 call and would like to know how others are treating them Romy son > Can k2 even produce a medical emergency, in and of itself? Guest guest
I understand that it's real, I was merely attempting to note the lack of any real studies I can find pertaining to its effects to humans. And besides the synthetic which it is sprayed with, and the possibilities of contamination therein, I haven't seen specifically any herbs and spices that are common to it. Maybe it's mint, maybe it's Jimson weed. Ergo, you have unknown herbs and spices being smoked, plus the synthetic, which may or may not be contaminated. You're facing the typical issues of street drugs (did they really get the drug they were promised?, is it contaminated?, etc), multiplied due to lack of clinical research and the relative newness of the drug. And since its new to the streets and gaining popularity, I would expect to see a higher instance of contamination and of people experimenting than I would with, say, cocaine or ecstacy. I think that maybe a mixed-drug overdose protocol would be more useful than one specific to K2. You asked for thoughts... there are mine. But take it for what it's worth - $0.000002 (approximately). Guest guest
K2 is the brand name of an incense or tobacco product blend. This is a synthetic cannabinoids (notablyJWH-018), which mimic the effects of marijuana. It's becoming illegal quickly and for good reason. Most services are treating just symptoms and that is usually to no avail! I know companies are working on a drug test that this will show up on. We are drug tested every time we go off shore, and I asked since Louisiana has made it illegal how are they going to test for it and I was told, " We are working on that now! " This was at a drug testing facility outside of Lafayette. Anything in an overdose can cause a medical emergency, I know of some that do it and they have had no problems as of yet! By no means am I saying it's okay... Just surprised they haven't had any problems!! > The chemical compounds sprayed on the substance burned trigger sever hypertension and tachycardia. Guest guest
Touché Kenny. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a post on the forum. > > >>> I'm asking because I've run on a couple of K2 call and would like to know how others are treating them <<< > > > We are treating them with p.o. Guest guest
I have had a few runs with K2 overdose calls. We have not changed our protocol to account for this specific drug, instead just treating the presenting symptoms. May not sound like much but after conferring with our local ER Doctor, that seems to be the best treatment for now. Quinten NREMT-P
