Guest guest
Alan: There have been failures and, if you dig back through the archives of this group, you can read about some of them. Also, if you talk to any of the surgeons who perform resurfs - they can tell you about the cases where a resurfacing patient has required revision (conversion to a THR). From what two doctors have told me, 1% to 2% of resurfacing procedures may fail due to AVN or femoral neck fractures - in either case a femoral component with a stem (THR-style) is used in the revision surgery. I don't think anyone is claiming 100% success - that would be irresponsible. Guest guest
, As I mentioned to -Lou, I hoped to couch the question in some lightness. I apparently didn't go back far enough into the archives. And I'm really not trying to borrow grief, as I look forward to what I hope will be the resurf that gets me back on the handball courts. Just trying to keep hope and expectation in line with reality... so I was looking for some of the less happy realities and hadn't found any. It's so easy, when so many people have had such good outcomes, to hope/believe/expect mine will be the same. At this point the only one of the three I can reasonably entertain is the hope. I have to keep a bit of rein on the belief and the expectation. All the best, Alan > > A note from a curious (and... some would say... suspiciously twisted) > > mind: Is it possible that resurfacing is 100% successful with ideal > > outcomes at all times? Guest guest
Hi Alan Mine has failed, I'm going in on Thursday to hopefully have a large head metal on metal thr using my bhr pelvis cup. If they find infection caused the failure I will be put back together without a hip for a while. The success rate is very very high though. Guest guest
Hi ALan there are also people like me who are not recovering as fast as these people playing tennis at 6 or 8 weeks or gardening at 5 weeks etc! I am at 4 months and the max I can walk is 30 minutes and that is pushing it. I am very very gradually improving but it is no where I thought I would be at this time! Sunita where are " the others? Guest guest
Alan: I think it's totally reasonable to want to see the whole picture. The factor that really convinced me was when I figured out that about the worst possible outcome would be to have a revision to a M-o-M THR device which would have been my first choice in THR if resurfacing weren't available. Whatever time the Resurfacing gives me is all a bonus and there is a possibility that it will work for a long time. Guest guest
Alan Check the past posts and you will see that we talk about failures. I have posted a few months back about the 3 failures my OS mentioned to me when I asked him about his negative experiences. Out of those 3 he had to remove the femur head & neck in 2 patients and insert a metal shaft + Ball that was compatible with the acetabulum component which remained unreplaced, and one patient had the acetabulum cup repositioned (it had slipped) and that patient is still counted among the 330+ successful ones that had the resurfacing done by him. So, the failure rate is about 0.6% in his experience/case. Guest guest
, All the best on Thursday. No need for you to retell your story, I'll go back and check your previous posts. Thanks for your note. Although the news is not good, it's important for people like me to remember that there are no sure things...in medicine, in surgery or in life. Let us know how it goes. Guest guest
... I'm with you. I'll gladly take the risk. I have to keep reminding myself that it is a risk and not a certainty. If I could get another year on the handball court...I'd be there every day, and value the time I get there...or anywhere else in life without the pain, and without walking like I'm 85 years old. I think you're right, too, the downside of failure isn't as dark as it used to be...now that they've got M-o-M and the Big Femur Head. Guest guest
Hi Dr Mark I am 61 and was very active physically (i am a Dance Therapist) bike, exercises swimming etc.. before surgery; the only thing I was not doing much was walking cause that is what hurts the most. I have simply OA. I was in good shape and was eating a healthy diet. I am small and slim. at surgery and right after, I lost a lot of blood and I had to have 2 blood transfusions which would account for part of the slow recovery. But now it has been 4 months and I don't know why it is so slow. sunita where are " the others? Guest guest
thanks Dr Mark for the support. I have been working on improving ROM, distance walked etc but not systematically and I like your suggestion to set goals for each week. I will start to write down today my goals for this week. I hope though I don't get too disapointed if it does not happen or if I have set back like I have had many times. I will use this forum to support my goals and will write about the results. thanks sunita where are " the others?
