Guest guest
I have been wondering this for a while... Why do we only want to know Spanish for medical situations? How many times have you been with a patient who speaks English and ALL you talked about was medical complaints, and comfort words? How often did you only pay attention to the medical things that the family or bystanders said? Also, how many of you, like me, have taken one of these courses, not used it for a few months...and then could remember it? If you are going to spend the money on something...why not invest in something like Rosetta Stone, bit the bullet, and actually learn the LANGUAGE? Then when you are in a Spanish speaking only environment...you will pick up on all the information not just a limited, slim set of the information. Just curious on a cold Saturday morning... Dudley Re: Medical Spanish Courses Give this site a try, we have their books, and they are very helpful. http://www.emergencylanguage.com/home.html McGee, EMT-P > > Does anyone know of a particularly good medical Spanish course or have any recommendations? > > Thanks > > Alyssa Woods, NREMT-B > > > Sent from the itty bitty keyboard on my iPhone >

Guest guest
Well... The problem I have is that I don't know medical terms. I don't speak much Spanish, but I know enough to make a very basic conversation. I just don't know how to say things like... Tu este en manos buenos (you are in good hands), or Adios y espero que te seintes mejor (Goodbye and I hope that you feel better), or basic words like vestigo (gallbladder). Sometimes, I can piece things together, but that's not what I'd like to rely on in an emergency, and most definitely not the basic field guides they have out for the iPhone. I could just go out and memorize it, but having something written in your head, and knowing how to read it, and knowing how to say it are very different. My apologies for the lack of accent marks - I can't figure them out on this keyboard. Guest guest
I have heard nothing but good things about Rosetta Stone, and am VERY curious about the program. It claims to be different than anything else out there. No memorization or useless drills. But it is very expensive. In the other room, I found a CD Spanish language software bundle named TOPICS Instant Immersion Spanish Pro. It wont load onto Vista, but this puter I am on is running XP, so Im going to try to load it. As I was reading the instructions, I found a line that reads: " Once the installation is complete, it will create THE ROSETTA STONE group in your program files. " There is no other reference to Rosetta Stone anywhere else, so....Im wondering if this is a Co-Op with Rosetta Stone, or what? DeDe says she bought it years ago, at close out for about 10 bucks. I checked TOPICS website, and they have it listed as discontinued, with no tech support due to a contract running out. They were not specific about the details. This is a 7 CD set. Im wondering if it is an older generic version of the actual Rosetta Stone program. This will be interesting to see, once I load these disks onto XP. I would LOVE to have some better Spanish Speaking skills, even if I didnt work on an Ambulance. I'll keep my Guns, my Freedom and my MONEY, You can keep the " CHANGE. Guest guest
The Pimsleur system is excellent. It does a very natural progression and concentrates on the most conversational language. Rosetta Stone did not come quite as natural to me as Pimsleur, and it does not focus early on foundational words as well. However, overall, Rosetta is a much more comprehensive approach that resulted in more long term learning and retention for me. Just note that, as asked in the original post here, you'll still need to learn your medical and physiological vocabulary elsewhere. I did it with a couple of books, one a programmed text, and through conversation with native Spanish speakers. Anyone with a 210 area code shouldn't have any problem finding one or two of those! Heck, do like I did and marry one. You'll learn a lot very quickly! If you've got the time and money, the best way to go is to go native. There are many language schools in Mexico, and some of them are set up to provide medical clinical experience for Gringos to get used to doing H&Ps en Espanol. Guest guest
I used Rosetta Stone while willing the hours away at the BP Oil Spill. The system uses pictures and word association, just like you were talking to a baby. It was very intuitive and I feel it works well. It didn't come as quickly as I hoped, but by repeating the lessons a few nights a week the words started coming to me, and they're still up there after several weeks. It's very, very expensive, but I felt it was approximately worth the value of the price. - Brad Sattler > > > > > Rosetta Stone is good idea, and several could > pitch in together and share. Guest guest
the difference is that Rosetta Stone is Copyright protected....government documents aren't... ck In a message dated 12/20/10 22:38:11 Central Standard Time, rob.davis@... writes: Maybe Wikileaks will release Rosetta Stone to everyone for free. Guest guest
actually, the use of tax statues and the RICO act has been a mainstay of US Federal prosecutions for a long, long time...Capone was one of the most notorious, but far from the first. ck In a message dated 12/20/10 22:46:13 Central Standard Time, rob.davis@... writes: On Monday, December 20, 2010 22:39, krin135@... said: > the difference is that Rosetta Stone is Copyright protected....government > documents aren't... How funny would it be for Wikileaks to go down for copyright piracy, but nothing else? That's almost Capone-esque! ------------------------------------ Yahoo! Guest guest
That approximates my own experience with Rosetta Stone (Spanish & Arabic). The one disappointment for me was the vocabulary progression. At the point where Pimsleur is teaching you useful things, like how to order a beer or find the bathroom, Rosetta Stone is teaching you how to say " elephant " and " horse " . Great if you're a veterinary student. But, it seems that the vocabulary progression could be a little better thought out. It definitely works though! Mexico is a scary place these days, for sure. But the interior is at least as safe as Houston. Language schools in Merida (near Cancun) and Cuernavaca (north of Mexico City) are far from the border wars, and well established. Guest guest
I took an immersion course many years ago at Instituto de in San de de, north of Mexico City. San is a wonderful town and the Instituto's courses are outstanding. I expect that San is quite a bit safer than Houston.
