Guest guest
hello Tony, I had the same concerns before my op but there is not too much to worry about. A pillow either side should do the trick even with the painkillers. Good luck, Jane
Guest guest
Hey Tony, Sleeping is/was a big concern for many or us. I know I struggled with sleeping on my back. In fact, the whole sleep deprivation thing was a big downer for me. Once I got home I took a sleeping pill and a vicodin before bed and that helped me some. I only need it for 2 nights, after that I got some sleep. I went to sleeping on my non-op side at night #5. I slept all the way through about night #8.I have a gigantic " body " pillow- a 5 foot long pillow that I rolled my surgical leg onto. It was AWESOME! I could support my whole leg, all the way down to the ankle. And it was virtually impossible to roll too far. As well, I could place my non-op leg under the pillow, and use it to bend or straighten my surgical leg, which helped me fell like I wasn't " stuck " in one place too long. If your'e worried about flopping around and screwing up your resurface, you needn't be. I have never heard of it happening yet. And if you were really worried about it, you could always strap yourself into the yellow wedge of doom- a kind of foam wedge with manacles- that is designed to keep you from rolling and flailing your way to disaster. ly I hated the damn thing. The body pillow was a life saver. At 3 weeks I could sleep on either side ok, and in almost any position I wanted. Guest guest
I actually used mine as a white elephant gift at a Christmas party I went to. I had to explain what it was about 20 times because everyone was so confused. It was fun. Just an idea for what to do with the leftover foamy wedge. > > Hi everyone > > > > I've read most of these posts and I think I have only one major > > concern as I prepare to have my rt hip resurfaced in July. > > > > How important is it really to stay flat on one's back during the > > first few weeks post-op? Guest guest
Thanks for all the input. I think I'll go with the pillow technique first. If that fails, it'll be the water torture. But I'll make sure I know where my nearest yellow wedge of doom shop is, just in case. If you get resurfaced at JRI, they'll give you your very own YWOD to take with you and treasure as a lifelong souvenir. Everytime I look at mine, it reminds me of the food at LAOH - to which it bears more than a passing resemblance. ;-) It brings tears to my eyes (as well as a persistent auditory hallucination of an orchestra of car horns playing " La Cucaracha " ). Steve (bilat C+ 4/20/04, Amstutz) PS> If you're only being resurfaced on one side, you'll probably be able to sleep on your non-operated side in a few days. It's really not that bad. Mine is a blue wedge from hell. A nurse friend gave me one when I told her I wanted to try it (this was a couple of years pre-op). I thought this wedge might be a way for me to loosen my adductors some, as they were getting so tight that my legs would cross during the night. I struggled my way into the straps (which was an effort in itself) and lay there for about two minutes. I couldn't stand it, so ripped the straps off. Thankfully my surgeon doesn't use them on resurfacing patients, but I'm sure if he did, I would have survived it with drugs.... The blue wedge from hell now resides in a high corner of the closet. It may go in the garage sale pile in a day or so though... Cindy C+ 5/25/01 and 6/28/

Guest guest
And I'm considering Belgium???? Sheesh, the extra $5K compensates for the YWOD, el concierto of " La Cucaracha, " and a luxury stay with gourmet cuisine in LA (though is Belgium better?)! What am I thinking!? ;o) In surfacehippy , " sog1927 " wrote: > > > Thanks for all the input. I think I'll go with the pillow technique > > first. If that fails, it'll be the water torture. By all accounts, the *hospital* food in Belgium is (much) worse than the food at LAOH. The breakfast buffet at the Holiday Inn is supposedly terrific, though. I'm sure if you ask the folks in Ghent, they could get a couple of orderlies to come into your room and hum " La Cucaracha " at 3AM just so you wouldn't feel you were missing something. ;-) Steve (bilat C+ 4/20/04, Amstutz)
