Guest guest
It is common for anyone on MS Contin to experience respiratory depression, perhaps with your history of asthma, it would be best to refrain from using the higher dose right away, but gradually work up to it. Jill MS Contin and asthma? Well as I posted yesterday my GP has changed my dosage of MS contin from 15mg twice a day to 30mg twice a day. I switched to that dose yesterday morning (so am about to take my 4th dose at the new level). Today however my asthma has been the worst I have ever felt it. I had never really had an asthma attack and anything mild the 'blue' inhaler could help. Today I used the steriod inhaler once (can only take it in the morning and at night), the rescue inhaler four times (the max daily dose so I cant take anymore today) plus some ibprufin in case there was some immflamation. I basically was unable to do anything today. I had some chores to do for my mom and this is an example of how bad it was today. I went and folded one load of laundry and could barely get a breath and was breathing really shallowy. Plus I would be covered in sweat and be so hot it wasnt even funny. I would then go, use the rescue inhalor and lie down til the next load was done. I would be so hot I kept lowering the temperature on the thermostat so the air conditioning would come on. When my dad got home around 4 I had it down to 22 in the house and I was still warm and sweaty. He had to put pants on him and a sweater on r. According to him I was as white as a ghost but my cheecks were really flushed. He told me to just sit down and watch a movie with r while he cut the lawn. Mom got home around 5 and immediatly asked me what was wrong. I told her and then went over to the pharmacy to get a new inhalor (realized that mine expired last month, r has the exact same one so I put his 'cannister' into my holder thingy for the day). While over there it came on again and I got really 'clammy' and lightheaded. I tried to check my blood pressure and pulse rate and while my blood pressue was 117/79 the pulse meter (what I was really interested in) wasnt working. The only thing that the pharmasist said to me when I asked if anything over the counter would help was to NOT take cough syrup and if it wasnt getting better to go to emerg. I came home and basically have spent the night lying on the couch. I got up at one point just to take my plate into the kitchen and wash my hands and ended up short of breath again and sweaty. Now my back and chest are really sore, I have this weird cough, still breathing shallowy and have a head ache / lightheaded and my throat is starting to be sore. I dont know if this is from the MS Contin increase or just actually having an asthma attack I mean the weather around here is just 'prefect' for allergy sufferers. Also is there anything I can be doing for myself at this point? Guest guest
I am thinking you should let your doc know what is going on. I had reaction too and ended up in the ER. Don't let this go too long and I agree with Jill you should not be increasing your dose till you speak with the doc. Debbi Re: MS Contin and asthma? Guest guest
Thank you Jill and Debbi for your replies. I looked into what dosages of ms contin where available since the 15mg did work wonders until i became (what i feel at least) tolerant of it. It only comes in 15mg, 30mg and 60mg dosages (for the doses under 100mg anyways) so I cant even really work up from 15mg to 30mg as the pills are not to be cut or anything like that. My doctor is the one who upped the dosage and he does know that I have mild asthma (he diagnosed me with it). I dont want to stop taking the higher dosage in case that leads to other problems right now but will most likely heading into the ER tomorrow to get it checked out. My GP is only in the office in the morning and I have to watch r tomorrow morning while dad works on the cars. I checked into webmd and noticed that I had symptoms of an alergic reaction (with the slow breathing) and overdose (slow breathing, weakness, tiredness, and cold and clammy skin). Well I think im going to call it an early night and go to bed to see how much sleep I will actually be able to get. Stacey

Guest guest
Dear Stacey: Jill & Deb were right on the nose. Your symptoms absolutely need to be checked!! Pronto. It could be related or not. Drugs react differently on different people & even differently on the same person at different times. I persoanlly have a mild case of asthma & took MS Contin 30 twice a day for @ 8 years & never had a problem. So it could be unrelated, it could be related to something else within you, but I would doubt that it's the asmtha, specifically. But if your symptoms started right after taking it, it's likely the ovbious guilty party for you problems. Hope all works out OK. Guest guest
Stacey, It sounds like to me you may be experiencing respitory depression from the increased dose of the MS Contin. The increased dose may be making you breathe less per minute and causing the respitory distress. You need to discuss with your DR. ASAP or go to the ER. If it's just asthma you may benefit from a home nebulizer machine, different from the hand held inhaler. The sweatiness can also come from the MS Contin. Don't take anymore of the higher dose till you see the Dr. ASAP! Sincerely, S. Guest guest
I am pretty sure it also comes in 10mg. It could be possible you are allergic to the MsConitn as well and this increase in dosage was enough to tip ypu over. It could be completely unrelated or it oul dbe the respiratory depression that narcotics cn have on people. I too am an asthmatic but only had a couple of real asthma attackss and I too sometimes get hard of breath from my med's and even though I have been on my dose for AGES (60mg am and 100mg pm) I statred out on 10mg twice a day. Try getting it in 10mg dose and try taking 2 twice a day as this will give you 20mg and then work slowly onto the 30mg. Tell your doctor ASAP and if gets any worse go to the ER. Remember that you can also overdose ont he inhaler an dthis can cause similar reations including sweating and shaking and such. Good Luck and take it easy and get yourself looked at and a peak flow test done (you pharmacists should be able to do this for you as well). This will tell you just how well your lungs are working and if it is a TRUE asthma attack. As I have these weird attacks which ive me every indication of an asthma attack and it can be from my GUT. I take Ventolin (Reliever)(the blue puffer/inhaler) as well as pulmicort a steroid puffer (Preventer) and also Oxis (a 24hr ventolin type product) I don't take these all the time (although I am supposed to) but do take the pulmicort and oxis when feeling a bit odd and the ventolin is only for during an attack. Look after yourself and make sure you tell your doc asap.
