Guest guest
Hi Greg, If I were to have gone to Belgium for a resurf, I would have had the BHR installed. If, (God forbid) my resurf would one day fail on the femoral side, I would need a total hip replacement. This I would probably have performed in the U.S. (Insurance would cover it, and lets face it....the THR they are good at here.) A femoral component from a THR would not be compatible with the acetabular cup of a BHR. But the acetabular cup used with the conserve + IS compatible with the femoral component of the (potential) THR, as long as it is made by WRIGHT, the makers of the Conserve +. This way, the acetabular component would might not need to be replaced during the THR. I just read the above paragraph and am now thouroughly confused myself. What this means is that if you have to have a THR done cuz your resurf fails, the cup needs to be replaced too if you go to belgium. But the cup can stay, and a THR femoral component will fit it if it's a Conserve +. Just a little less surgery, I suppose. It's just an added bonus....one that I hope to never access. Good luck. Guest guest
Hi Guys, I thought the coys were busy buying each other out anyway...........thus only a matter of time before all compatible bits were available.............. And as BHR seems to make the special cup for certain conditions I would imagine it wouldn't be long before it was also available in US in any event............ i.e. one would think in the end even those patients wouldn't have to fly to Belgium to have a resurf.............smile. No airline is going to let you fly to Belgium, so the BHR cup would be traded for another brand of THR, at least until & Nephew gets the BHR approved in the states. That to me is really the only down side that I see to the whole Belgium thing. Cindy C+ 5/25/01 and 6/28/
Guest guest
I'm pretty sure DeSmet has a stemmed femoral component that works with the BHR cup. Guest guest
Never Mind! I just re-read your post and finally understand it! Maybe this is the reason DeSmet is experimenting with Conserve Plus. It's not like he's moving to the US... There are compatible femoral components for the BHR, so if you need a revision to a THR, you can always head back to Europe. I plan on doing that if/when that day ever comes (I'm not planning on it coming, BTW). No, I didn't/don't know that de Smet was interested in the Conserve Plus, but as careful as he is, he might actually be undertaking a study to evaluate its merits, rather than hopping on some partisan bandwagon...
