Guest guest
Yikes Tina, 350 is high. Isn't your dr going to prescribe something else to lower it without having to change your mood stabilizer? I'd hate for you to have to have your bipolar acting up because that would definitely be worse ... hugs, Cait Cholesterol, darnitTo: mserslife <mserslife >> Okay, so several years ago when I was on Tegretol I had a routine> cholesterol check and my cholesterol was over 350. > Yikes! Guest guest
I don't know - I'm going to talk to him about what we can do. I mean, I " m 38 and already hit that high on the cholesterol. I just don't know. Tina Yikes Tina, 350 is high. Isn't your dr going to prescribe something else to lower it without having to change your mood stabilizer? Guest guest
Hey Tina...I have a thought...how about Lamictal. It is in the same category, I believe as the tegretol and trileptal, and I also think it has mood stablizing aspects. I'm on 450 mgs of it, and it helps me in a few ways--for moods, but more importantly for my trigeminal neuralgia.Keep us posted.hugs, KateTo: mserslife <mserslife >Sent: Thu, July 7, 2011 12:10:10 PMSubject: Cholesterol, darnit Okay, so several years ago when I was on Tegretol I had a routine cholesterol check and my cholesterol was over 350. Yikes! I did some research and found that Tegretol increases cholesterol levels. So my next neuro appointment, (this was before MS) I asked the doctor to change my medication to Trileptal (unfortunately what I didn't know was that trileptal has the same effect). After getting my cholesterol down to a manageable level through medication several years ago, and then cholesterol medication was dropped because my levels were down to normal, I was no longer on the Tegretol, and I was eating better and exercising. My (former) doctor did a cholesterol check, and my numbers were above 300 again. He put me on a small dose of pravachol. That didn't work. So he increased the dosage. Now I have a new primary care doc, she continued the pravachol, but I didn't realize that Trileptol is having the same effect on me as the Tegretol did (they are basically the same med, but trileptal has an extra oxegyn molecule). As it is now, the Trileptal is also acting as my mood stabilizer for my bipolar. So, I can ask to get it switched to something else, but then I have no mood stabilizer. Then again, I haven't been manic in YEARS. I just really think I need to get off this medication that's raising my numbers so high. It can't be good for me. Guest guest
He wouldn't change me at this point. Although when I told him I had periods where I felt like I was going to have a seizure, he did order an EEG for next week. He also won't agree to putting me on Neurontin for my nerve pain, because with being on Trileptal and Keppra XR to control my seizures, adding Neurontin (another anticonvulsant) would over medicate me - so I guess the nerve pain is just soemthing I have to live with. That's one complementary medicine I swear by, just wish I could afford regular sessions .. hugs, Cait Re: Cholesterol, darnit He wouldn't change me at this point. Guest guest
I love acupuncture as well, Cait. My acu-guy charges $80 a treatment; not covered by insurance either! So, I don't go to frequently.love,KateTo: MSersLife Sent: Fri, July 8, 2011 11:24:38 PMSubject: Re: Cholesterol, darnit ..Any chance you could get a few acupuncture sessions?
