I have put the op off continually and turned two sugery dates. For me the turning point was when I could not do basic things any more. It hurt to walk to the local shops, to ride my bike, swim, hoover, dance, work and sleep. I was happy to give up sport but to have to get in the car to go round the block was ridiculous. As i sai before the problem is you can end up inreal misery if you leave it too long as waiting lists are long. I would say when the pain starts to wake you up at night then is the time to get on the list as for me it was all down hill. Others might say different as we are all different. The only good news is waiting lists have to come down to six months by end of the year and from next year you will be able to choose a hospital with a shorter waiting list. take care Cheryl
Guest guest
The answer depends on what you want for your quality of life. When I was turned down for an osteotomy I refused a THR. I walked about with a crutch and insisted on rock climbing even though the pain made me hurl sometimes. (After a while it sure was tough to find a belay partner!!!) When I found out about resurfacing it was full speed ahead for me!! Just keep careful tabs so that you do not loose your candidacy! Best of Luck, Rock climbin' Jude LBHR D Smet 09/11/02 When to push for waiting list (UK) Only just found out I am in line for resurf. Judging by what I read on this site the consultant is probably right when he says I am not urgent yet - don't take pain relief, haven't been able to run for years but can walk up to about 5 miles (not every day, but often, do have bone on bone right hip and obvious limp. He suggests I will know when I need to come back - he was asking things like how often in the last seven days have I woken in the night in pain (answer: never). Most of you seem to suffer much more than I do at present, but given it looks like I could be a year from surgery from the point of asking GP, how bad do you suggest I let it get before surgery? I was willing to go private if he thought it was necessary but he said he expected to see me back again sometime in the next 5 years ... Any advice would be welcome. I never had problems sleeping, but had been bone on bone for at least five years, so I can't trust that as an accurate guideline. I could only walk to my next door neighbor's, had to haul myself up the three steps to their porch, couldn't tie my own shoes or put on socks without the sock helper, and was in pain any time I was on my feet. Sleep was the only relief for me! Cindy C+ 5/25/01 and 6/28/01 Boyd
Guest guest
Cindy, thanks for your comments on your condition pre op. I think I will start pushing before I reach that state ... it's difficult to know how fast the decline will be ... Now I know what the pain is it seems worse than it was when I thought it was muscular!
