Guest guest
Hi, Without your age and circumstances it is difficult to comment much about the osteoporosis other than to say that I entered into my BHR with some degree of osteoporosis. I was 53 at the time and the osteoporosis was localized to that femur and was the result of poor use for a long time. Within 6 months of the op and 4 months of very light use of the leg, as I didn't have many muscles to actually support proper use, the femur bone was already picking up and seems quite good now 18 + months later. I took no calcium supplements it just did it with better use and stress weight loading of the bone. A question you may like to ask the THR doctor is just how the bone will pick up density after the THR for my understanding of things is that THR are simply not as good at forcing that to happen as a BHR........i.e. the design makes stress loading is better. To find more answers to the issue of ceramic and poly THR you may be better placing a question on Totallyhip list as that is debated endlessly over there. Best of luck with info gathering. Guest guest
Who was the Dr. in Calgary that told you were not good for resurfacing? The Docs in Calgary have performed maybe 30 BHRs each. DeSmet has done well over 1500. Who would you trust? Kent surgery with osteoporosis I have opinions from Dr.De Smet in Belgium and Mr.O'Hara in Birmingham who think that am a candidate for BHR despite some degree of osteporosis. I also have opinikns from a Canadian surgeon in Calcargy, who does not agree. I would wecome any comments. Also I have been talking to a P.Walzcek in SE London/Kent area and would like to know if anyone has experience with his surgery. He is of the opinion that I would be better with ceramic on ceramic THR rather than BHR. Last question - has anyone any knowledge about ceramic on Poly THR - prostheses? Guest guest
Thanks for your reply - Both Dr.Smet and Mr.O'Hara in Birmingham have done many provedures and have great reputations. I think i will ask him some pointed questions about DVT and the flight home etc., which is one of the concerns. Guest guest
Thanks - I am 65 but reasonably fit and active (or was until this trouble). It took 5 years to get diagnosed and then I was the one who diagnosed it. Now I am bone on bone in one hip and have osteoporosis, I think largely because of lack of exercise. The other hip is halfway home on osteoarthritis also with some osteoporosis. The comments about Dr.De Smet are so positive that I have now put the question to him direct and am looking forward to his comments If anyone ever asks you about the Canadian Health Experience with orthopaedic surgery - it sucks. The wait list in BC has doubled in the last 5 years.
