Guest guest
Hi Think that the only person who can clarify is good doctor himself.......... I would doubt they can remove the Resurface prothesis all that easy and so he would be speaking putting in a cup to match........... They use femur head prothesis THR replacements to match the other side so I can imagine they do the same with Resurface too......... I would still wonder if it wasn't wise to at least have a 'conversation' with Amstutz about it all........... though I really sympathize with you about contacting doctors who have been painful to deal with............have a few myself........... Best of luck with it all - it isn't a problem I envy you having.......... Guest guest
Check out your options in the states I have a friend who went to DeSmet and got a BHR...on the end of a big stem. I'm not a surgeon, but do you really think if he removes the Conserve (femoral component) he can have enough bone to work with to put a BHR resurface on. Wouldn't it be better to get a Conserve acetabular unit to correspond with the femoral component. Guest guest
Sounds like you have it right. You could ask Amstutz or maybe Gross in SC about the possibility of matching your existing C+ femoral resurf with the corresponding acetabular component. You could also ask Koen why he doesn't think completing your C+ hemi would work. I trust him completely and can vouch for his skill as a surgeon and his compassion for others without hesitation or reservation. If it were me, I'd hop a plane to Belgium and let De Smet work on it. He's done more difficult cases than anyone around and if he says he can revise your hemi, it's because he can. I don't know of anyone who has gone to him and come away disappointed, myself included. Good luck! Guest guest
Dr. Amstutz is under the impression that Dr. DeSmet just this week began implanting the C+. You should confirm this directly with Dr. DeSmet. Guest guest
I think one of Dr. DeSmet's videos shows the replacement of an old hemi-resurf; he took off the old hemi and put in a bhr. The emphasis of the video was the bone quality after removal (and before replacement with a bhr. Talk about incompatible materials - metal on bone! I met the patient before going to Belgium - he was 8 weeks post op and doing very well. Guest guest
Hi Greg, Apparently, your friend didn't examine Dr. De Smet's web site very closely. The good doctor's educational highlights and CV (curriculum vitae) are available at hip-clinic.com. More specifically, Dr. De Smet's educational highlights are at: http://hip-clinic.com/en/html/education.html and his CV is at: http://hip-clinic.com/en/html/cv_de_smet.html Jim V.S. LBHR, Dr. De Smet, 11/25/03 > Hi > I am sort of in the same place you are as far as heading to Belgium. I e-mailed Dr. De Smet and told him I was interested in having my left hip resurfaced, ideally in June. He penciled me in for June 15th! Wow, things are really moving now. I have a friend who isn't sold on the idea and I keep telling him about all of the positive testimonials on this site, and after he looked Dr. De Smet's website he asked me if this guy was an MD? I checked it out myself and honestly couldn't find it out. Do you, or anybody else out there know if he is an MD, and if so where/when he went to school? And if he is not an MD, what kind of problems would it pose? I have been very impressed so far with everything that I have heard about him, but now I'm curious. > Greg (Wisconsin)
Guest guest
Yes, I found this very funny. When I told people that I was going to Belgium for surgery, they just couldn't believe I would leave the " the most advanced medical system in the world " to have surgery in a foreign country. It was as if Europe was still in the middle ages and a barber was going to do the operation... > > Guys > > Do you really think that one could perform medical operations within EU > (European Union) without being a qualified doctor with a passed state exam and > a further specialty qualification?
