If they think you have an infection, they will do a blood test and SED rate to

see if levels are elevated. The next step would be a hip aspiration where they

numb the area around your hip with Novocaine (or something) and then inject a

needle into the hip capsule to extract synovic fluid. (Trust me. You do not

want to undergo that procedure!) They then try to grow cultures in the fluid to

determine if there is a bacterial infection, and that takes a number of days to

determine.

As far as antibiotics for dental cleanings (or any other dental work), I take my

Amoxicillan about 1 1/2 hours before the appointment.
