Hi,

To the best of my knowledge it is only about teeth because there is some

evidence that work done on teeth can directly allow potential infection

factors more easily into the blood stream............. However, there has

been arguement about even that............ and again much will have to do

with ones own state of health and general luck............ That's without

the issue that if one swallows antibotics a lot then general immunity, when

actually needed, may be expected to be compromised......... i.e. one does

oneself no favours swallowing antibotics regularly............

Many people with various prothesis get along quite fine with all sorts of

life 'infections' and even get their teeth worked on without

antibotics........ I know someone with 2 THR's who was never told he needed

antibotics for teeth work............ and has these 2 THR's happily working

8 and 12 years later..........others have pacemakers etc.

I had extensive osteomylitis when a teenager with one area being within

inches of my new hip......... Every doctor I have ever seen until Dr Len

would have horrors about touching my hip area because of this 'potential'

infection which they saw as having about a 98% chance of

reoccuring.......... I am coming up to my 2nd year celebrations......... Yes

I do take antibotics when I get my teeth cleaned but I am happier to just

concentrate on keeping my body healthy and exercised well than rely on

antibotics for anything else...........

It is all part of this gamble thing about life.............. one can be

paranoid about it all or just take care and keep healthy and go

enjoy.............. for even the 'experts' can be proven wrong time and time

again..............

I've had numerous small infections such as you describe. Either ingrown

toenail, ripped hangnail, etc. that always seem to get slightly

infected. I think about the implants when it happens, but was never told

to take antibiotics for such things. If we did, I think I'd be on them

constantly-lol. I just say a prayer for quick healing and that it stays

away from my hips, and so far, have been fine. I did go to the OR when I

sliced my finger with the electric hedge trimmer, as I had not had a

tetanus shot in a number of years. Came out of that one with five

stitches. Then again when I stupidly tried to break up a dog fight with my

hand. Got two bites from that, and I did take a round of antibiotics

(several days) for that one. So far this year, I've managed to not do any

major injury to myself.

Hi Cindy,

Were all these encounters with hedge trimmers and dogs the results of your

renewed enthusiam for life following a Resurface.............smile.

I am glad to hear that you have had a few months of injury free time given

that history.........smile.

Thanks Cindy and Edith for some perspective - I was feeling very

paranoid this week - found out I had been walking around with a

sinus infection for about a month.

I emailed Lee Webb (from Dr. Gross' office) about this as well,

and she said that anything that causes pus can be a problem -

strep throat, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, stuff like that.

I wonder if there are any studies on this subject - as to what the

risk factor is, percentage-wise. Do the polyethylene implants

react the same way? And does the risk taper off after time?

Hi Nor,

I think that was about where it was left when we last had this

discussion........... it does seem to have a bit to do with individual

dentists........... and personal situations........and how everyone who is

involved feels about antibotic useage. There is also the small matter of

some dentists feeling a little vunerable re the legal situation.........not

wanting to be sued etc.........so it gets fairly complex.............

Wishing you all the best for your visit to my country..........

Edith LBHR Dr. L Walter Syd Aust 8/02

> Antibiotics must depend on the dentist. I was in for a normally

scheduled cleaning before my hip surgery. When the dentist heard about

upcoming implant surgery, he immediately scheduled extra work he had been

keeping an eye on for the last few visits. I was told to check with my

surgeon for what specific antibiotic I should take, as the dentist said he

would not preform any future work without it.

> Dr Gross in fact gives you a wallet sized card with antibiotic

information covering various situations including dental.

some with me in case I need any emergency work. He also says I am to get a

fresh supply every year.
