THE MOVING TARGET: UNDERSTANDING WHY ARTHRITIS PATIENTS DO NOT CONSIDER

TOTAL JOINT REPLACEMENT

Many patients with arthritis in their hips or knees may not be giving

appropriate consideration to the option of total joint replacement surgery

to treat their pain. According to a study published in the July 2004 issue

of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, candidates for this surgery use a

variety of sources to help them make the decision whether to undergo the

procedure, but often rely most heavily on input and anecdotes from peers and

family. This decision-making method can cause them to postpone surgery,

sometimes indefinitely.
