Guest guest
, I only drop in occasionally these day, so maybe this has been raised before (I looked but did not find any reference). You must be our " oldest " resurfacing. Thirteen years is a remarkable history. Could you give us some background? How does it feel? How active have you been? Has Mr McMinn seen you recently, in which case how well does he think it is doing? Anything really.... Sorry if you have been through all this before, but I have always said that I hoped to get fifteen years out by BHR (also with Mr McMinn) and any more was a bonus. You are nearly at that milestone. Guest guest
As I mentioned in the earlier posting I had my resurfacing done in 1991 so I was one of McMinns 'guinnea pigs' and I believe the youngest at the time at 21. After the op I was able to do the same stuff as any other active 21 yr old - I went out to dance the night away a couple of times a week although I have always been a bit cautious of some sports - but that was mainly because I was so paranoid about spoiling the work done and I didn't want to push my luck. At 34 I am still pretty active - walking over the Malvern Hills at weekends and running around after my kids, both born since the operation. The first baby was born only 2 years post op & my littlest is 6 today! I don't see Mr McMinn regularly anymore as I am still an NHS patient which he no longer looks after. Instead I see Mr Treacy at the ROH every year or so for a check up. However I was invited to see McMinn at my 10 year aniversary. He was very pleased with how I was doing & was astonished that I was walking in 4 inch heels with not the slightest hint of a limp. He compared xrays from 2yrs post op to the 10 yr ones and thought the hip looks healthier and stronger after 10 years. It will be the 13th aniversary of the op on 26th September this year and I am completely pain free, I forget that I've had it done sometimes until I see the scar! I will be really happy to get to 15 years but the way its going I think it'll be more like of 20yrs+ > > Sacha > > > > I had CDH (left side) which went undiagnosed until I was 4 - like > you > > I had a few operations over the years to try and correct this. Guest guest
Wow, ! There cannot be anyone on this list who fails to be inspired by your amazing achievements. Long may you be the shining beacon for all of us who believe in the longevity of resurfacing. McMinn did both my BHR's, in 1999 and 2000, around the same time as 's and it is so encouraging to read that he believes your hips were stronger after 10 years than 2 years.... Accordingly, I'm off to give mine some serious abuse in the Italian Dolomites over the next couple of weeks (trekking and mountain biking). Well, McMinn did tell me to " hammer them " ! > Re: - our most experienced resurfer? > > > > > As I mentioned in the earlier posting I had my resurfacing done in > 1991 so I was one of McMinns 'guinnea pigs' and I believe the > youngest at the time at 21. Guest guest
, Thanks for that - really good news for all of us here. If there is no wear after thirteen years (and look in files at the sort of hammering athletes like Eddy has been giving his for eleven) then I doubt we are going to wear out the metalwork. We just have to hope it all stays in the right place! I have a friend who was talked out of a resurfacing by her surgeon because she was still of child-bearing age (fears about metal levels). Glad to hear you had no problems there either. Regards, Vale (without the four-inch heels this evening!) Guest guest
Hi , Interested to hear you write about going to college etc........... A year younger than you I found myself quite upset earlier this year wondering just what to do now I had my life back and seriously unskilled for much at all in the new world that had happened while I was lost in my hip/body hassles............. As I have sort of learnt a bit about muscles and things over the last couple of years, I decided to keep following that trail and do a fitness instructor course which starts next week............the aim is to end up with water aerobic and water rehab teaching skills.............. This seemed about the only sane course of action to take with a body that isn't all that capible of dealing with many land based activities any more..........i.e. I don't think I would be up to anything quite as challenging as an acting course...........smile. I guess there is much for us to be grateful for to being able to have this opportunity to again find new challenges and do you find like me that many of your peers find it a bit strange as they are planning retirements rather than starting something new.........?? Guest guest
Hi , I just want to say hi, and wow! 4 " heels - that is but a dream to me!! How did it feel to undergo this surgery at your young age with the uncertainy that went with it? I'm 26 and I've had a chd of both hips although only my right kills. I'm being offered PAO or resurfing and need to make a decision soon. Did you undergo PAO first as a child? I'm trying to make the right decision for my health rather than trying to go for a 'quick-fix' in terms of recovery time - I don't believe for one minute there is one, but trying to explain that to someone with normal hips is difficult. Take care and keep on running around with your kids!
