Guest guest
Greetings fellow resurfacers and prospective patients: I am writing to say thanks to those of you who helped convince me to choose resurfacing over THR (especially Cat, , , Wolf and Miren). Dr. Gross resurfaced my left hip last Wednesday (5 days ago) and it feels great. As advertised, the bone pain is COMPLETELY GONE!!! All that's left is some swelling and weakness characteristic of this surgery. Tim from Michigan had his his done on the same day by Dr. Gross and I am sure he'll be posting thoughts about his experience as well. At 's suggestion, I stayed at the Hampton Inn in West Columbia, about 2 blocks from the hospital. The people there were great and they ferried me to and from the hospital at all hours. They really went out of there way to help post op as well. There are special rrom rates for Dr. Gross's patients too - about 50 bucks a night! I would highly recommend the Hampton Inn to anyone going to see Dr. Gross. Lee Webb, Dr. Gross's right hand, was extremely friendly and helpful. In addition to scheduling the surgery and helping with all of the questions / preparation, Lee is a surgical nurse and has assisted Dr. Gross on all of his resurfacing procedures (which now number over 350!!). They did FIVE resurfacing surgeries the day I was there. Lee also helps complete the surgery by closing the skin with a subcuticular suture technique which provides minimal scarring and precludes the need to move any staples or visible sutures. Thus, all patients of Dr. Gross can thank Lee for the minimal scars you have!! Dr. Gross was extremely friendly and passionate about his procedure. He answered all of my questions and I felt totally confident with this procedure going into surgery. The anesthesia protocol was great!! I had general anesthesia for a back surgery 10 years ago and was spaced out for 2 days. In contrast, at Lexington Hospital, I had an epidural with sedation and was back to normal by lunchtime. Dr. Knight popped a little catheter into a vein in my hand (bee sting) and gave me 2cc of Versed. I rolled on my side and felt the sting of the local anesthetic.............and then I woke up in recovery. That was it!! I was paralyzed from the waist down for the first 24 hours post op (strange feeling!!). My epidural catheter kinked during the first night and I woke up the next morning with (almost) full feeling in my lower half. As the hip pain was not bad, and the few remaining numb areas were not associated with the surgery, I asked them to pull the epidural. I did one more day of Vicodin and then haven't needed any additional pain meds since. The nursing staff at Lexington Medical Center was great!! The nurses are attentive, compassionate and experienced. I walked on my hip the day after surgery with the help of the physical therapy staff. The ability to walk has increased and the pain and stiffness have decreased with each passing day. I am experiencing some of the " clunking " that others have described. I think the joint capsule is really loose, there's not much lubrication yet and the metal parts are just bumping into one another. I am glad that I gave this procedure a chance. I can say that like many things, the anticipation of the surgery was worse than the actual event. I would recommend this procedure to anyone who is considering resurfacing. Thanks again to all!
