Guest guest
Jill!!! We are sooo much alike! I am 51 but noticed a drastic decline in my range of motion I'd say about 5 years ago...I, like you, have always been as active as can be in spite of my hips..aerobics, snow skiing, water skiing, lots of walking...but then a couple of years ago I noticed that my range of motion was not good...and getting worse so I joined a gym and really had intense pain on the stationary bike and then one day around Christmas I was shopping, carrying a bunch of packages and my hip hurt sooo bad that I almost had to hop to the car....well that took me to the Orthopedist (Jan. '04)... who did an x-ray and gave me my diagnosis..Protrusio Acetabulum, or " Otto Pelvis " . It did give me some justification for my inability to do all those hip activities all of my life. He said one of my hips was much worse than the other and is really sinking into my pelvis...yes, I saw it! and feel it in the groin. Anyway he told me that I would be needing bilat. hip replacements. I didn't really take this well because my husband is a marathon runner and I've always tried to participate the best I could in everything but now I can't do much of anything! I'm definitely not his dream-come-true! (he is an internal medicine physician) Well, (this is getting long!) I started researching this protrusio thing and I've been at it probably for about 12 weeks now, and I think there aren't many of us! But, I did find another girl whom you may want to talk to who lives in NYC. She's about your same age. She has protrusio and had a re-surfacing in Birmingham, England a couple of years ago and is about to get her other hip done. She said it's great and that she now has better range of motion in her re-surfaced hip that she ever had in her life. She said that the only minor drawback is that the operated leg is now a bit longer than the non- operated but the second surgery will even them out. She said that the first two days after surgery you will feel terrible but after that your muscles will want to get you up walking. ....Where in Germany do you live? Are you German? You certainly speak good english! Are you just having one hip done or both? Thank you sooo much for responding...I would love to follow the course of your surgery and rehab...re-surfacing in the US is in it's infancy and not done routinely and I oh-so want that range-of-motion! Only another range-of-motion deprived person could empathize! I'm having a hard time convincing my husband that that is the way to go. Please keep in touch. My e-mail is sjkotr@.... Thank you and GOOD LUCK! Susie

Guest guest
Hi Susie, I'll be having both hips done but not at the same time. I'm planning to have the left side done in November. I have more (it is quite difficult to have more than none) mobility in the right hip i.e. it serves me better than the left. However, it is the side that gives me most pain. That's why I've decided to go for the right side first. I hope I get such good results that your husband cannot do anything else than tell you to go for resurfacing. I'm going to try and send you an email. As I cannot read all of the address I'm not sure it's going to work. Let me know if you receive it. You can contact me at gl2004 at gmx.de Maybe you can let me know how to contact the other girl. Jill P.S. I'm English... > Jill!!! We are sooo much alike! Guest guest
Hi Greg, Join the gang... I had to laugh reading about the stretching exercises. I've been to quite a few physiotherapists in the past and have I caused them real headaches. I made them throw all their text books in the corner. They each had to develop new methods to get me in to any position at all where the muscles could be stretched. I always get to hear that they do not get taught at school how to cope with patients like me. By the way, I just call my current physiotherapist the torturer... That probably says it all... Take care. Jill > Hi Susie, Jill and others, > > Yikes! Protrusio Acetabulum? I was just reading some of the messages and stumbled across yours and I fall right into this catagory too!
