Hi Rhea;

Thanks for letting us see your new brace. What kind of brace is this? Did

you recently have surgery?

(sorry for the questions; my head has been buried underground for the most

part)

I recently got a new spondylolisthesis brace and finds that it almost works

too well. I places my hips in a tummy tuck position within minutes and it

feels great when I have it on. I can't believe that 'normal' people can

feel that sturdy.

It is the next day that hurts. It hits me in my knees, winging scapulas and

neck etc. The muscles over my spondylolisthesis have shortened which has

been making my spine unstable as it pulls it out of place.

I am unsure if I am doing myself a favor wearing it; but for now am

increasing its wear about fifteen more each day hoping to get up to six or

seven hours a day so that I wear it for long walks etc when I need to.

This brace looks similar to what I recently had made - click on figure 1

(though mine does not go up this far in the back)

http://www.spine-health.com/topics/conserv/overview/braces/br02.html

I am also curious about any fashion tips that anyone can provide. How many

people wear their brace under their clothes?

Thank-you for all the compliments! You know I barely need a swimsuit

with this thing LoL ;-)

We recieved the bill today for my brace. The grand total was $908.62

cdn. Yowzas, **thank goodness** we have insurance that will cover

80% of it. :-X :-O

-----

Laxity--

Yes mine is classified as a Thoracolumbar Sacral Orthosis (TLSO) and

the front was custom made (I was casted for it) and the back was off

the shelf. In the back there is a small section cut out around the

fracture site. The top part of the back has been made to wing out so

it doesn't bother my shoulderblades, but unfortuantely it still

catches my left shoulderblade and pushes it yet more forward. I see

them on the 24th and will get them to modify this little bit.

I have to wear the brace because I suffered a compression fracture

and a displacement fracture of the anterior corner of my L2 vertabrae

when the horse I mounted May 23rd collapsed. I have -1.8 osteopenia

(at the age of 19!) which was very likely the main contributing

factor. I've been started on Fosomax to try to prevent more bone loss

and maybe even build some bone density.

I would be very careful in wearing the orthosis too often! It's all

right for moving around in, but really pace yourself and do not lay

down in it! This is one brace that's really not meant to be sleeping

in. My first night home I had a lot of pain and it was caused by

doing too much in the orthosis while the narcotics were leaving my

system so I couldn't recognize I was doing too much and ended up

being re admitted to hospital. I've had the brace for 11 days and I

just started yesterday to begin to eat a meal sitting in a chair at

the table in the brace. Before that 30 mins of sitting was just too

much! Yes, I do find the brace makes my knees, shoulders, and hips

hurt even more. I think its because the brace, or having a back

injury (or both!) make the rest of the body over compensate to work

around the problem. It sure is the pits, isn't it, to have to work

around one problem in a brace but worsen three other problems.

Ugh...

I hope your brace helps you out Laxity! Just take it really, really

easy in building up wearing it! I really hope it helps you out...

My main problem is trying to get the bloody thing on tight enough.

I'm not that strong and I don't think I've been able to get this

thing on as tight as it should 'really' be once. I'm in and out of

teh brace about 15 times a day and can't really call for help that

often!

All the best. I hope I helped ;-) If you're in Canada the folks who

made my brace are Ampos in Ottawa. They were very good, very

thorough, and took the brace on/off me 4 times to make adjustments to

be sure it was working well before letting me go home.

Thank you Jill! Mom now tells me that OHIP would have paid for 75%

of it with this form the nurses had given her for the surgeon to fill

out. Phew, glad to know that is available for any future 'incidents'

as I don't know how much longer I'll be covered by their insurance.

Anyway, there is a safety net after all!

Thank you for the compliments. Its not something I would

call 'comfortable' but it allows me a chance to get out of bed so I'm

not complaining. (Give me another week with hot weather, then I'll

be really complaining!!!)

Take care Jill!

Hi Jill,

I have to wear it for three months. It has to be on if I do anything

other than lay flat in bed. And yes, it is waterproof :-) It's

designed that way so you can have a shower. The only problem is that

the straps take a while to dry, so if I were to go swimming I would

have to lay down to put the suit on, put the brace on, go swimming,

then find a bed again so I could lay down to take brace off to get

the suit off, and somehow get the brace straps dry again. It could

just work though! I see the brace guys at the end of the month and

could ask them for suggestions. I " m sure I'll figure something out

this summer :-)

Take care Jill :-)
