Guest guest
IMPORTANT: I recently applied for additional whole life insurance (already have some from Texas Teachers Retirement, but wanted to supplement it). I received written notice that I had been denied, and the reason cited was " medical history " . Upon further inquiry, I was told that it was specifically because of me having Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (have Classical and Hypermobility). There was no other reason given, and I questioned Ruth Wolf several times to be certain I had understood her correctly. I was honest in all my health disclosures, and have no condition which is terminal. I do not have Vascular EDS, which I can prove (have had the skin biopsy, and even had it re-examined by Dr. Byers' lab). I told the underwriter that I am alarmed and would not have even bothered to apply had I thought that I would be denied for a condition/syndrome which is not fatal (excluding possibly Vascular EDS), and one in which there are MANY degrees of severity. I was told that " the information is now in 'MIB', a database available to medical and life ins. companies, and that I now must forever after disclose that I have been denied coverage because of EDS. This is effectually like being " blacklisted " . Please....I want the medical research community and other EDSer's to know and share this information of my experience. This decision was based on ignorance of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. The upcoming EDNF Conference in Buffalo, NY in July would be a perfect time to share this very grave concern. I was also told, " anyone who thinks they may become disabled and has group life ins. from their employer may convert that within 30 days of becoming disabled/unable to work " . What about those of us who had little or no warning? I silently thought of young Dylan....fine one day, disabled the next....not with Vascular EDS, but with Hypermobility EDS.
