The gene, called SUMO-4 helps to regulate the body's immune system.... When the SUMO-4 mutation encounters an environmental trigger, such as a bacterial or viral infection, it throws off the normal activity of the immune system, which initiates an autoimmune response that attacks the patient¹s own tissue...
