Dear All

I am seriously considering hip resurfacing ( I have severe OA 6

years after a bazarre accident where I had a two column fracture of

my acetabulum) - but am concerned about the serum levels of chromium

that have been found at least in the first 6 months post surgery - I

am hoping to have children after this -

Does anyone know what type of chromium is being used - ie 3 for

exmaple - apparently 6 is the toxic one - I would be interested in

peoples opinions about this - I have been talking to a number of

metal specialists etc -.

any thoughts on this would be appreciated -

Thanks

Kala

Hi Kala,

There is some good info in an email back a couple of months............

someone with apparent scientific knowledge did a posting on it........ The

email will be under metal ions............

We have had ladies turn up who have had children - more with metal on metal

THR's............ simply because there are still more of them.

Noone has ever produced any evidence that anyone has been impacted via serum

levels of metal following hip replacements and there are a lot of them now

in the world both of resurface and THR varieties.

Almost two years on many of the severe health hassles I was having through

my fused hip, which included my skin being yellow, me feeling poisened

regularly and doctors fretting about my liver, have gone to a large extent.

Thus I have decided metal ions have been good for me................

Babies are a different kettle of fish but I would wonder how anyone was

going to separate out some of these effects from real and everyday pollution

impacts.

I would not pretend to advise you concerning metal ions and the

risk to child-bearing, but JRI recently posted two studies regarding

the metal ion issue on their website.

Ultimately I think there is little or no data regarding risks

regarding child-bearing. All you can do is read the various opinions

and metal ion studies which have been done to date and decide how

much risk you are personally willing to assume.
