Guest guest
You're right, hip surgey can cause some major pain. Have you ever tried taking a medication you are allergic too and regularly taking benadryl or atarax to decrease the reaction. You wouldn't want to try this if the reaction is anaphylaxis. I too am allergic to most pain medication and a pile of other stuff. I go to the Environmental Medicine Clinic here in Nova Scotia (peopel travel across the country to come here), When I started takingthe oxycontin, I got the blotchy rash, low grade fever and mild resp problems. Since I was laready allergic to Morphine, demerol and the skin adhesive in the duragesic patches. I thought " my bloody crazy body isn't ruining this for me too " and I regularly took benadryl with it. After a week I would actually take it with occasional benadryl and after two weeks I never had a problem with it. I have been taking it for five years. I was just thinking if it wasn't a severe reaction, it might be possible to either block the reaction with something or using low doses of the pain med they planned to try and use the benadryl as I did might slowly desensitize you. Also, I used something called Tri-salts which I find works best for allergies related to ingestion (like a food or a pill that is swallowed. It does't help as much for an insect bite or something that was injected. The drug store here makes it - I don't know if it is a common compound that others would have the instructions for. You just mix it in water and drink it. I think it cost about $12 Canadian Also most hospitals have an acute pain service, usually run by anesthesia. I expect you would see anesthesia in a preadmission clinic with all those allergies. This would be the best person to ask about pain control post-op. Hope this is helpful Joyce
