It depends on what you want but my favs are Dick Blick and Sax Arts and Crafts. Get on their mailing lists along with Triarco and Nasco and all these companies send sale catalogs during the school year. Sax is tied to School Specialty which is really good about discount items. All of these companies also provide free art lessons. Their websites are:

www.dickblick.com

www.saxarts.com

www.triarcoarts.com

www.enasco.com/artsandcrafts

My best advice about buying art supplies is to pay attention to sales, look for discounts and above all always shop around for the lowest prices. That's why it's good to know about lots of companies who sell them. Another website other art teachers and myself love is the Incredible Art Department. http://www.incredibleart.org/ This site offers outstanding art lesson plans for all levels and other cool things. It's a really good site! I also have links on my school website to art games, artists, art museums, art activities etc. http://www.rivervalleyschools.org/mhs/staff/Skaggs/Skaggs_Art.html Scroll down, you'll see Art Links and click it. Bear in mind if you look at anything else on my page that I haven't updated it yet for the new school year but the links are still good so just ignore my class stuff.. One of my favorite links is to a site that is from the Lloyd Foundation that lets you design a 3D house. There's also Pac Mondrian, very fun! Good luck. if you have any questions let me know. I'm always here!

Yes! Amy I would gladly take your advice and ideas for art lessons for these grandkids. Do you know of any mail order supply for art/craft supplies that are cheap? I only have Dollar Tree and Walmart to buy the art supplies and they are both sadly lacking. ear

Kids can be wonderful and they can also be such creeps;) These grandkids are nearly 9, nearly 14, 15 and nearly 17.

Well, the side effects were a little better today. I'm down to 20mgs. and there's no more dizziness. My hip isn't hurting too much either so I hope the worst is over.

I, as you know, teach art. I am blessed with teaching 6th-12th graders with yes, their hormones and their mouths. Some days they're the sweetest kids in the world and others that vein on my neck pops out and I have to count backwards from 100 to avoid saying something back to them I'll regret. But aside from occasional rude ugliness, I love what they can do with their creativity and originality. Sometimes it takes my breath away what they do in my art room. Generally, I have an outline of what techniques and skills I want to cover as the school year progresses in accordance with Michigan's Visual Art Standards and Benchmarks. As far as lesson plans go, I let myself have a few options. When it's time to teach a specific skill, I review what I did the previous year. If I liked the outcome I'll teach it again or I can modify the lesson if I feel something needs to be touched on a little stronger or I could just get creative and make a completely new lesson for the skill. I do that especially if I'm bored with teaching a lesson or like this past year the kids I had just kept inspiring my creativity to try different things with them. I love years like that.

I don't know if you remember but I taught elementary art for several years and I could give you some ideas for art projects if you like. Elementary art was so much fun, I hated leaving it but middle high school was full-time and I had to do what I had to do.

One fan, try four including one table top that blows air on just me at my desk. That's my game plan until the temps here drop. That's the best thing about starting after Labor Day, I don't have wait too long for that to happen anymore.

Amy

At least your taper will be over before school! Take a big honkin' fan with you to put in your classroom. Do you have a lesson plan done for the year? What do you plan on doing with the kids this year? What grade do you teach?

I love that your school year doesn't start until after Labor Day! All the schools in Arizona started either last week or this week. It's so hot for those poor kids. I remember when I was a child living in the hot Sonoran Desert. School started after Labor Day and it was still extremely hot. One year on the last day of September I walked home in 110 degrees.

You probably remember that my household homeschools. I sat down with the grandkids this morning to ask what their goals are for this coming school year. I was tickled that the 8 year old has the goal of learning more about American History and Arizona History. She says she also wants to learn more about Columbus and Indians. That's so exciting to me! I have ordered several art/craft books and my plan is to do more arts and crafts this year. My 15 year old granddaughter wants to take art classes at the local college. She is self taught at sketching and is pretty darned good.

I'm sorry... I start talking about the kids and homeschool and I began babbling:)

Solumedrol is a 1000 mg dose steroid that I got an infusion of for 5 days. So because of that I have to taper down with prednisone or it could kill my adrenal glands (so they say). So for a week 40mg a day, next week 30mg a day, then 20mg, 10mg, 5mg then I'm done) just in time for school to start. First day of school is day after Labor Day but I'll have to go in about a week or so to put away my supply order and start getting my classroom ready. I'm dreading this to some extent because I know my classroom is more than likely an inferno especially considering how hot it was this summer (the building traps in heat).

I hear you about the crying. Anything and everything was setting me off last week. It's getting better the smaller the dosage but prednisone can be crazy. It's a process to get better though. Can't wait until I'm done.

Amy

Hi Amy

I've never had Solumedrol so I've never tapered off with Prednisone like you are. When I take Prednisone I take 60 mg three days in a row and that's it. My doc says this way it doesn't causes contribute to osteoporosis.

I started yesterday and by last night the feeling of my legs and feet being swollen (they weren't) was going away. I can already walk a little easier. I did wake up at 1:58 a.m. crying though. After two hours of trying to fall back asleep I got a Hornsby Hard Cider out of the fridge and drank it down. I was then able to go back to sleep for a few hours. I got the Prednisone headache by bedtime yesterday and I'm still a bit headachy now.

That's how it affects me. I'm sorry you are having so many side effects with yours. How long does that normally last for you?

When does school start?

How does Prednisone make you feel as far as side effects go? This is my second week of taking it to taper me off my high dose solumedrol infusion and I've basically run the gammit - bad mood swings, dizziness, hip-joint pain, sweating in my sleep, weakness and others. Don't get me wrong, steroids help. I'm not dragging my leg anymore or falling into things but I'm just curious if someone else goes through this with prednisone. The side effects are driving me nuts.

Amy

Over the past week it has been harder and harder for me to walk. It feels like walking through jello--only worse. I am dragging bad. Then yesterday the TN pain came back with stabs in the right side of my ear. So I am on Predisone.

I am counting on feeling fantastic by tomorrow:)

Thank you so much Amy! I used to get Dick Blick and Nasco catalogs but I realize now that it has been a long time. I will check them all out, as well as your website. I used to paint but it has been so many years and I'm not sure if I still can. My good easel was left in Alaska and my so-so easel was smashed in storage. My 'thing' was landscapes--mostly desert scenes but I did a few seascapes and still life too. I haven't picked up a paint brush in 12 years or so and I'm sure all my oil paints are dry. I don't know why I ever stopped. Thanks again. I do appreciate it!hugs SharonThis email is a natural hand made product.
