Art, it's clear you have lots of drive (pun intended) but I'm going to give

you some medical advice which you can weigh carefully because it comes from a

lawyer.

Wait until the magical 6 week mark passes before you begin engaging in the

antics your brain is telling you to get into, and wait for the magical 10 week

mark before you do anything further approaching normal swinging.

One problem that athletes have with this surgery is that all the while we

were in pain, our minds kept informing us of our capabilities and our bodies

were

saying " no " .

Now that the pain is gone, we tend to think we can act in accordance with the

instructions from the brain. You need time to heal and you could possibly

compromise that process if you don't take it slow initially.

So what I'm saying is (maybe appropriately on Reagan's memorial day) whoa

there, big fella! There's plenty of time to prove yourself after your body has

caught up with the new reality.

Art,

I am pleased to hear you doing so well. It would be great to see

you stride down the fairway and swing the big dog compared to the

gait I witnessed first hand when we met at OH.

I was so elated with the absence of pain in my hip that I started

jogging down the street at ten days post op with no weight on the

crutches. I fully realize that I tended toward a very mentally

unstable approach to rehab historically, however, this time I have

been doing my best to reel myself in. I can't believe that I am

saying this, but you really need to listen to guys like Des, Dave

and others. They know what they are talking about, not to mention

they have twice as much experience as we have in this area. I am

finding that many of us are cut from the same fabric. It is

probably what drove us to seek an alternative to the restrictions of

THR. Some of these common personality attributes also drive our

enthusiasm to quickly regain our prior status as very active and

athletic people.

I can't wait to make a real turn on the ball. Don't forget you owe

me a lesson. Take it slow buddy and give your hip time to recover.

I would hate to see you have a setback. I am doing my best to be

patient and I know the frustration. There are some aspects of the

healing process we cannot expedite.

Glad to hear you doing so well....

Hi Art,

What is your last name? I would like to know if I remember watching

you on TV at a senior pro tour. Do you think Jack would be playing

better with a resurfaced hip as opposed to a ceramic THR? I would

appreciate your point of view on this if you don't mind?:-)

Dear Art,

If I were you I would stop taking chances with your hip. Surgical

repaired tissue will take a minimum of 3-6 months to regain >50% of

preoperative strength and it will take another 6 months to reach 90%

of your preoperative tissue strength. The 100% mark is not reached

until way beyond one year of healing (and that is healing without

injury). So unless you want a THR in a few years and look like and

play like Jack-BACK OFF THE GOLF SWING FOR AT LEAST 6-12 WEEKS!!!

Torquing your hip is the worst movement you can do for your repair.

Trust me I'm a doctor ( and a surgeon)

Good-luck

Regards,

Dr. Mark

Dear dr. Mark, your words penetrated very deeply, so i am looking

forward to further discussion and put a call in to Dr.Todd to try to

hear his viewpoint. Dr. Schaltzreids counsel was no golf for 6 weeks

and my ortho's advice was go out and try it and if it feels ok don't

worry about it thanks again Art
