Guest guest
Well, I don't know about the veracity of the article, but it seems that the FDA and " the government " were/are involved in questioning this drug & its side effects. And there surely are tort lawyers out there who hover like buzzards on a branch, waiting for something to roll over so they can pick at it. But having said that, I also know that the pharmacuetical companies produce these " babies " and then promote them to targeted consumers, via the medical providers. Most folks do not question the doc's prescription. Two years ago I was given some cholesterol lowering drug (forget which one) and gradually I became aware that the muscles in my left leg were in big trouble. This, folks, was the " beginning " of my hip oddysee. I could not figure out what was going on. Had a lot of trouble walking any distance. One day, on my way to the office, I just turned the car around and went back home. My butt/hip/thigh hurt too badly to make the effort. This was 2 years ago! Back surgery, said my GP. NO! said I. Then I just happen to overhear a TV ad for this drug and this woman said, in a very nonchalant way, " One of the side effect is muscle weakness, see your doctor if you experience any muscle weakness. " AH HAH! I damned sure had that. In fact, the muscle in my quad seemed to be atrophying. Now I don't know if the OS was already at work and THAT is what was happening, or if the muscle weakness side effect so torqued my hip joint that I began to wear down the cartilege (my right hip is in excellent shape). OR, more likely, the OS was beginning to hurt and the whole confusion over the drug and it's effects on me kept me AND my doc from diagnosing hip OA and saving me a lot of grief. Whatever. The point of all this is that the side effects of Vioxx is related to cardio conditions. I did not know that. I tried the drug, too. Didn't do anything for the pain so I stopped it. But what about those folks who take it and, coincidentally, have heart attacks??? There are no ideal solutions to the pain, I reckon. Ibuprophen made my stomach bleed and I consumed a drug store full of Prilosec. And Vicadin made me nuts. What's the answer??? I surely don't know. Joyce (Dr Gross, LHR, 2/2/04) sungold518@...
