Guest guest
Hi Glen I’m not a cyclist. I suppose the closest expression for my hobby is biking (as in motorcycling). We could be talking semantics here as I am not familiar with the US biking or cycling jargon. Anyway, although I do cycle as well – last week I suspect I clocked about 50 miles in 3 days on my mountain bike – my passion is my motorcycle. Prior to my resurfacing I rode my bike quiet extensively – last August/September I rode some 2,000 miles by going in one go (20 odd hours) to a destination 1,100 miles away in Europe; the return trip was somewhat shorter (I got a lift from a car transporter driver as I got caught in a torrential rain) – but my left leg, where my bad hip was, acted like a windshield throughout and I felt very sore after these long journeys. Last week I mounted my bike again and rode tentatively some 50 miles or so only to find that my left leg is now hugging the petrol tank and my hip/bum no longer hurts. I hope to ride my bike tomorrow to my first check-up – I had my hip resurfaced on 16th February – and the hospital is 100 miles from my home. If the weather improves – it’s currently cloudy and wet – I shall be riding there. Apologies for not being able to reply to your specific questions, but I did not understand those expressions, nor do I have your experience. If you don’t mind, I’m curious as to why you opted for THR instead of hip resurfacing which, by all accounts, results in a practically unrestricted ROM and nearly no evidence of dislocation (I understand that both of these points could be applicable to THRs)? The reason I’m asking is that I was supposed to have THR of my left hip but opted instead for resurfacing, obviously believing it to be a better option for me. Somebody on another board recommended that I track you down! I'm a cyclist, too, and I had a THR (cer/cer) six weeks ago. I've put 122 miles on the new parts, and everything seems to be going really well BUT I would really like to hear about your experiences with returning to the roads. I'm 46, and was racing until last year. My performance last year was really sub-par, and I quit riding altogether in October. It feels good to be back on the bike! My biggest " problem " so far is that I can't get in the drops. I can get on the hoods and get down pretty low, but the hip feels bad when I try to get " aero. " And I'm really, really slow, which I think is more from just plain being out of shape. If you get a minute, I'd really like to hear how things went for you! Glenn in KC, MO USA gwright@... Thanks, Dan! _____
Guest guest
Thanks for your response, Dan! I think semantics has gotten the better of us...someone on another board re= ad about you riding your " bike " long distances, and figured you were riding th= e same sort of " bike " I'm riding. They told me to track you down, and now I = find that you have an engine! However, 50 miles in 3 days on a mountain bike is = pretty impressive! Actually very impressive! I was very interested in resurfacing. I brought a bunch of information to t= he first surgeon I visited, and he told me it was wrong for me, blah, blah. The real= reason, probably, was that he didn't do them! He did say my femoral ball wa= s too deformed and chewed up, but that's probably not true. If I have to get = the other side done, I'll be more aggressive about resurfacing. It took a lot o= f work to find a surgeon who would give me the ceramic hip I wanted! I'm very happy with the total hip. It's nearly pain-free after 6 weeks. The= doc told me I can do pretty much whatever I want, and now it just feels stiff f= rom trying to obey the 90° bending restriction. I think I got lucky with a great surgeon, because my hip seems just fine. Maybe the different results from the two approaches have more to do with people being out of shape when they have the surgery. Some people that have gotten resurfs arent doing as well as I am with a total. Who the heck = knows? I think in a couple of years I may need the other hip done, so then = I can really compare! Thanks for trying to help! Glenn > Hi Glen > > I’m not a cyclist. I suppose the closest expression for my hobby is biking (as in motorcycling).
