When to push for waiting list (UK)

Only just found out I am in line for resurf. Judging by what I read

on this site the consultant is probably right when he says I am not

urgent yet - don't take pain relief, haven't been able to run for

years but can walk up to about 5 miles (not every day, but often, do

have bone on bone right hip and obvious limp. He suggests I will

know when I need to come back - he was asking things like how often

in the last seven days have I woken in the night in pain (answer:

never).

Most of you seem to suffer much more than I do at present, but given

it looks like I could be a year from surgery from the point of asking

GP, how bad do you suggest I let it get before surgery? I was

willing to go private if he thought it was necessary but he said he

expected to see me back again sometime in the next 5 years ... Any

advice would be welcome.
