Current recommendations from the AHA are two years following surgery. Some OS

want it longer.

Re: Infection !

I have premedicated every time I get my teeth cleaned since

surgery. However, on my last visit (it has now been over a year

since my second hip was resurfaced), my Hygentist asked if my OS

still thought I needed medication. I said I assumed I needed it

forever and she said in her experience that most patients

premedicated for a year following surgery as this was the time where

we were vulnerable to infection and after that not so much. She

said something about the bare metal being a perfect place for

bacteria to set up but after all the metal was covered with our own

tissue it would have the ability to protect itself. Anyway I guess

OS's vary in their recommendations. Has anyone been told that they

could quit doing this after a year or so???
