Doesn't it just figure???? I have an upcoming eye doctor appt - It makes me

wonder, too (I'm 51 and use reading glasses, but seem to have to keep going to a

stronger strength).

Well, at least your eyes have no EDS symptoms!!!!!!

Have a great time at the conference. Can't wait to hear all about it.

Bummer Day

Hi everybody,

I just wanted to whine a little I guess. I went to the eye doctor

today because I've had some problems lately with distance and also

with focusing. Everything just seems a little blurier. Well, I

found out why. I guess I have the beginnings of cateracts in both

eyes. The eye doctor told me that it's pretty common to begin this

way, and my symptoms match the way it begins, such as having

problems focusing and such. He is an opthalmologist, and a very

good doctor and well respected, so I trust him completely. The

bummer is, that he said it will be years before it gets to the point

of surgery - which is a GOOD thing - BUT, I can expect to have

numerous changes in my prescription between now and then. He also

said I was a little young for this, but not extremely so. Here's

the bad part - the new glasses cost me $330! And the frames were

only $84. Boy, at that rate, if I need changes every few years

(which he warned me could very well happen) I could be broke by

then! He also said that my eyes look good in every other way, and

do not show any of the EDS-related problems. He said he has 3 other

patients that have EDS and none of us have the related problems.

YEA! He did tell me, that when it gets close to the point of having

surgery, that he will lean towards putting it off as long as

possible, should it be to the point of 'being close' just because

the EDS would put some risk to the surgery.

Just thought I would mention it, as we've talked about eyes lately,

and I would have never thought I would get them at 53. I was

thinking more of the 60ish age. Oh well, live and learn. Hope all

of you are well!

Thanks Patti, I'm so excited I can't hardly stand it! The reason I

wrote about my eyes, is that I wanted those who are around my age to

be aware and at your next eye appt. to ask about it.

Thanks Jo, I appreciate it! It's a minor annoyance, but kind of a

costly one. I hope others my age don't run into it.

Oh heck.... I'm sorry to hear this Lana. Darn cateracts. :-( I

hope they are very, very slow progressing and I sure hope you don't

need too many prescription changes at that price :-S I'm glad to

hear this guy has 3 other EDS patients. Wonderful that he's had a

bit of experience with other EDSers' eyes.

Thanks Rhea. Yes, I like it that he has other patients with EDS. He

had notes clipped right to my file, which reassured me.

Thanks Jill. But you know, comparatively speaking, I have it so much

better than most people that I really do consider myself very lucky.

The thing I hate the worst, is the cost. Guess I'll be working until

the normal retirement age - darn it! I was hoping to be able to

retire when my husband did. He's 57 now.

Oh Lana!

I am so sorry!

I totally understand how $$$$ the glasses issue will be.

I am *legally* blind in both eyes 20/800 !

The way that I get around the high expense is to wear contacts most of the

time and that way I can have a Rx change every 3 months and it is only

$35.00 each eye. Sometimes only one eye changes in the 3 month period so

that makes it even less $$

The other way is to get REALLY GOOD frames and use them to get new lenses

over and over again. Again, sometimes you have to only have one lens

changed depending on the progress of your changes.

Hope this helps a bit..

Welcome to the bad eye club! :-(
