s Hopkins Tops Best Hospitals List Again

Magazine Names Top Hospital In 17 Categories

POSTED: 7:01 am EDT July 2, 2004

BALTIMORE -- The s Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore is America's top

hospital for the 14th straight year.

The annual rankings, released by U.S. News & World Report, are based on a

survey of doctors nationwide on hospital reputations in 17 medical

specialties. The survey also looks at indicators such as death rates,

technology and nurse staffing.

The magazine named the top 50 hospitals in the 17 specialties and recognized

a handful of other hospitals that excelled in six or more specialties.

" The standards for ranking in 'Best Hospitals' are rigorous, " according to

the magazine. " Of all 6,012 U.S. medical centers (military and veterans'

hospitals are not included), only 177, or fewer than 1 in 30, were of

high-enough quality to be ranked in even a single specialty this year. "

The survey says Hopkins ranked in the top 10 in 16 of the 17 specialties.

The hospital ranked first in gynecology, otolaryngology and urology.

The second-ranked hospital on the honor roll is the Mayo Clinic in

Rochester, Minn., followed by Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, the

Cleveland Clinic and the UCLA Medical Center.

Complete ranking information will be published in U.S. News & World Report's

July 12 issue, available at newsstands July 5.
