Guest guest
Hi Marie My surgeon requested a bone density scan before he would recommend resurfacing as he said that resurfacing required good bone stock. Fortunately mine was exceptionally good. The bone scan was done on both hips, although we were only looking at resurfacing one hip. good luck, regards Kay L BHR 23/ 4/ 04 Melb Australia ( McMahon) hipcnm hipcnm@...> wrote: I have AVN and OA on one side only. I was wondering if it would be useful to see how the density is in my femoral neck. Might this be an indicator of how good the bone stock is? Will it give me any sense of how likely or unlikely I am to have the resurfacing " fail " ? I'm probably going to have a bone density done on my good side as a peri-menopausal baseline. I was thinking of having one done bilaterally to compare. Does anyone have experience or info about this? Marie
Guest guest
Hi Marie, It is now a pretty well accepted fact that bones work on a use it or lose it principal. Your surgeon may well need a bone density to decide on a Resurface (many do), but I am not sure what you feel it may tell you about your future attitudes towards exercise............ i.e. regardless of what the bone scan says now, the critical issue is going to be what you do exercise wise to increase and/or maintain your femur bone density........... My left side femur which was resurfaced was a lot less denser than the 'normal' right side but started to pick up as soon as I got weight bearing 6 weeks later............. so my preop density test didn't really tell much about what happened within 6 months, let alone what I will do with it 10 yrs down the track. Though I can tell you that I will be exercising with determination in order to keep my body and bones as healthy as possible and my Resurface is a crucial element in that plan.......... Guest guest
Dear Marie, My OS (in England) insisted on a bone scan before the op. This is because he said there were recent cases of woman who's BHS had failed because of the bone crumbling under the device (if I understood correctly). Therefore, he wouldn't go ahead unless he thought my bone was strong enough. Having said that, as Edith says, one's bone strength does seem to improve after surgery, as well, because of greater usage. Guest guest
Without overcomplicating the reply, make sure the imaging request directs your radiologist to separately report the bone mineral densities of the femoral head, neck, Wards and intertrochanteric regions of both hips if DEXA and head and neck if QCT in addition to total BMD. Make sure he/she knows that your exam is to help determine whether to resurface or replace your hip and be prepared to explain to everyone involved what the difference is. Good luck!
