Guest guest
Hi Alan, I live in the Bay Area and actually communicated with Dr. Ries a year ago (via e-mail) when I was still investigating resurfacing. I had heard that he was considered an outstanding surgeon and that he had used the Medical Conserve device (femoral side only), but he told me that he " [does] not do resurfacings because they require a metal on metal articulation " because he " [has] concerns about metal ion toxicity. " Incidentally, I also visited Dr. Stuart Goodman (Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery, Stanford Universtiy) in Jan 03 and he also pooh-poohed MoM arthroplasty due to his concern about metal ion toxicity. As for picking the very best resurfacing surgeon, I'd say from the research I've done (which includes reviewing most of the testimonials posted on this newsgroup) that the following docs are by far the very best (listed in alphabetical order): Amstutz De Smet Gross McMinn Treacy Hope this helps. I've heard of him by Elisabeth of HUSG if I recall correctly, and nice things said about him. BUT, his name and resurfacing were not in the same conversation. He's done a lot of research into failure modes of both hip and knee replacements, as well as the mechanical properties of these prostheses. No papers on resurfacing, but perhaps his research has persuaded him that this approach has merit. I'd ask him how many resurfacings he's actually done or assisted, and what the outcomes were. Guest guest
Jim... It actually helps a great deal. I'm not going to bother going farther with Dr. Ries. " Metal ion toxicity " seems to be something of a mantra in the Bay Area. Three docs... all of whom do THR's have said the same thing. I'll be sticking with Dr. Amstutz. Thanks.
