Guest guest
Greetings to all, Just as a follow-up and second to Alfonso's comment, UC is currently constructing a $14 million Center for Companion Animal Health Research, a very large complex on the west side of campus. Needless to say this is being financed largely by the pet drug companies and the vet industry but it still makes one wonder about our societal priorities. Of course this pales in comparison with the amount of taxpayer funds being used to project US political and economic power abroad vis a vis the military. Meanwhile, the health of Americans, particularly the poor and most vulnerable, continues to slide while we collectively obsess about external risks that, in the long run, are much less threatening than the decline in public health. Meanwhile take heart in the critical contribution that all of you are making in this most fundamental of struggles. -----Original Message----- From: alfonsolopezvasquez [mailto:lope9075@...] Sent: Friday, May 02, 2003 4:28 PM Subject: [ ] Re: Rabies at camps If there are no federal programs for migrant pets maybe we can propose legislation to set up a division within the US Dept. of Agriculture to protect pets! Sorry about the sarcasm but there is some rationale for my attitude in this regard as I have been a critic, well known among the more senior members of this group. I have stated for over 20 years, that in this country we place more emphasis on standards for the care of animals, domesticated and others, than what we do for the quality of life for migrant workers and their families. My more constructive contribution though - The function of addressing the immunization for animals that are raised to co-habitate with or among humans, belongs to local health departments. Transfer this accountability to them ASAP. Alfonso > > Are there programs that assist in vaccinating animals that live at > migrant camps? What are some ways this has been accomplished?
