Some days coming up with dinner ideas really is HARD. Usually those are the same days my cooking skills suck... I guess it's when I am simply focused on other things too much to be able to concentrate on food...Yesterday I did something inspired by an episode of Nigel Slater's Simple Suppers (a BBC cooking series that I just happened to watch, don't know that I have seen it before, but it might be worth looking for again...). He fried sausage meat with red onion, lemon peal and thyme, and then put on a slice of bread with mustard, as a sandwich. I thought "What if you do that with meat from isterband*, my favorite sausage, and add some more vegetables for more bulk, and put the mustard in the pan with it instead of on bread, and then serve with rice, or pearl barley (which is an ingredient in the isterband too)?"I did that. Added carrots and green peas, and added the lemon juice along with the peal (mostly just to not let it go to waste), I also added parsley (for color). Served it with rice. It was splendid! I haven't cooked anything with isterband that wasn't...but still though... And the vegetables added to the whole, too. I really like to eat vegetables, it's not quite food without it. I know some guys have an absolute vegetable phobia (like the acquaintance who saw me put carrots in my shopping cart in the grocery store and exclaimed: "I never knew you were a vegetarian!" I answered that, no, I am not a vegetarian, but I do actually eat vegetables... I guess to him that was the same thing...).love/Reb* isterband : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isterband--- In MSersLife , Kate Rothschild wrote:>> Sharon I KNOW you told me what Menudo is, but I plum forgot (what else is new in MS-land?). That must have made your day.> As far as those kitties, how will they manage outside with the snow and cold? Do they stay hunkered down in a barn?> > I made chicken parm last night for dinner. We had broccoli and garlic bread to go with. We have enough of the chicken for lunch. Then, I need to come up with something for dinner. I don't know about anyone else, but I get really tired of coming up with ideas for meals. Does anyone else get stuck?> I hope everyone has a splendid day.> love, Kate> > > > Subject: first day [1 Attachment]> To: "Group" mserslife > Date: Sunday, January 1, 2012, 9:10 PM> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >  > > > > > > > > > > [Attachment(s) from Sharon included below]> > > This is the first day of a brand new year. I find that exciting!> We are having a spell of warm weather so the ice has disappeared. Yea! I was able to walk out to the poultry yard today to say hello to the chickens and ducks. They look good so that means granddaughter, , is doing a good job taking care of them for me. > > My older dog, Blanca, went out to the birds with us. Blanca stayed busy burying all the bread we threw to the birds. The chickens just stare at Blanca when she does that. I'm attaching a photo of Blanca with a dog cookie in her mouth. She is such a sweet dog!> > I also stopped to visit with the> three little orphaned barn kittens. Their mother disappeared several months ago. They are so sweet:) I like to give them special treats on the back porch. Today I had part of a can of milk for them. They LOVE me for it! lol> My 24 year old grandson, , just got here. Since he has the day off work he decided to come over to play Dungeons and Dragons with a his cousins here. > > I have a pot of Menudo cooking on the stove. My daughter-in-law who is from Pennsylvania has a pot of sauerkraut and "kielbasi" (kielbasa) on the stove.  My son made a huge bowl of guacamole.  I made fudge yesterday so everyone has some of that.  Pig out!!> > It's a nice day! Sharon> This email is a natural hand made product.
