Guest guest
Having just heard about ASR through the media, it seems that my family doctor and the local medical community know little about it's outcome, reliability, availability or recent history of successes or failures. My doctor has encouraged me to research ASR. I had severe arthritis of the right hip diagnosed 6 years ago & am getting to the point where I have to consider some surgical procedure. The pain and immobility are going beyond what physio and medicine can help me with. I am an active 53 yr old who was an avid runner for 20+ years. Leading a very active lifestyle, including tennis, squash, biking, hiking & running, this problem has slowed me down to the point where I am limited to walking [with a cane for extended walks] and some biking. Otherwise, I am a healthy, average weight individual who is really trying, but generally failing to keep up with his active wife. We used to play tennis & squash together, jog & bike and really enjoyed mutual activities. Those days are gone, except for some walking and biking. The specialist has told me that aside from no cartilage, my hip bone structure is still pretty good and so I would like to pursue the ASR. Today, I am going for updated x-rays which I am planning to send to Dr. u in Montreal for his assessment. I have been attempting to contact Dr. Schemitsch in Toronto without success. These are the only doctors I am aware of that do ASR surgery within my general area. I am visiting Dr. Armstrong of Guelph in August to consider the full hip replacement, but would prefer ASR if possible. Can anyone give me any advise as I go forward? Thank-you for reading this rather extended story.
