Guest guest
Interested in learning about any members' experiences with resurfacing after undergoing a Free Vascularized Fibular Bone Graft. Interested in AVN sufferers experience with resurfacing as well (please include AVN stage at time of resurfacing). My partner (41 years old) has bilateral AVN. He underwent FVFG 6 years ago though still suffers extreme chronic pain and physical limitations so we're starting to explore options again. Thank you and best wishes for happy, healthy healing! Guest guest
I had a vascularized fibular bone in 1978 at age 19. It was considered experimental at the time. My alternative was a THR, or a life of pain and anguish. The AVN was the result of Legg-Calve- Perthese at age 8. I had a chunk that had died at the head of the left femur. I just had my resurfacing done 3 weeks ago at JRI in LA, and I was concerned that all the drilling from the Graft might lessen my candidacy, but the opposite was true. The graft helped keep the head vascularized (though to what extent is unknown), but the insertion of the fibula added density (the exterior of the fibula being harder than the interior of the fibula). So at age 44, some 25 (somewhat painful) years later, the graft had been a help. It didn't hinder my resurf at all, in fact it helped to make things stronger. Dr. Amstutz told me I was his 6th resurface following a vascularized fibular graft. DR. DeSmet also reviewed my x-rays and told me he had done some resurf's on VFG patients and that he would be comfortable doing a BHR. Those are two very very experienced leaders in the resurf world, if that helps you any. Through many years of research, I have learned that the long term advantages of the VFG are not impressive. It may be a way to buy time at at best. Let me know if you need more info or expererience. I'm still in the recovery stage of my resurf, so I can't give you an accurate portrayal of it's benefits yet, though the testimonials on this sight are many. I'll give you a home phone if you'd rather speak in private....I do have time on my hands right now. =-)Good luck in your research, there is a great wealth of knowledge on this web site.
