As far as I know, you can to protect yourself at any time, but in Alaska, I believe,  there is a bear hunting season.  A friend of mine's sister live up there, and every year they get their limit on what they can get, and send some down to her.

..I hope it doesn't sound 'wrong' but I'm glad she was in a coma when she passed .  Can you shoot bears in the US.  Here the stupid law stopped bear hunting and they've become dangerous rather than just  a nuisance.  A woman here was attacked by one in her backyard and a paperboy luckily escaped from one .... hugs, Cait
