Moderator- Ismael Rangel ************************************************************ From: Corselius <kcorselius@...> We are currently recruiting for the next class of Food and Society Policy fellowships. This year we are very interested in recruiting an individual working on farm worker issues as one of our Fellows. Please share the following announcement with potentially interested individuals in your coalition. A word document with the announcement is also attached. FOOD AND SOCIETY POLICY FELLOWSHIPS o APPLICATION DEADLINE - MAY 1st, 2002 o The Jefferson Agricultural Institute is pleased to announce a request for applications for the 2002-2004 class of Food and Society Policy Fellows. This is a national program of two-year professional fellowships offered to improve communications about food and agriculture issues in the U.S. The first class of fellowships were awarded in 2001, with the second class of fellows to begin in the fall of 2002. Primary fellowship support comes from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Program Overview The Food and Society Policy Fellows program addresses the need for consumers and society leaders to better understand the issues and challenges associated with sustaining family farms and food production in the U.S. today. Fellows use media, scholarship, public education and outreach to promote change in food and agriculture systems, through the creation and expansion of community-based food systems. Desirable food systems include those that are locally owned and controlled, health promoting, support environmental stewardship, and provide quality jobs. For more information on the program visit the website: www.foodandsocietyfellows.org. Criteria Applicants should be U.S. residents actively involved in a professional career in some aspect of the food and agriculture system. Some fellowship recipients are likely to be program directors or professional staff at non-profit organizations working on food and agriculture issues. Farmers or ranchers with a strong interest and experience in communicating about food and agriculture issues are also encouraged to apply. Individuals involved in education, research, or program development in food and agriculture will receive preference over full-time communications professionals. Administration The Jefferson Agricultural Institute (Columbia, MO) administers the fellowship in partnership with the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (Minneapolis, MN). Fellows carry out their activities in their existing workplace or residence and are expected to gain release time from their current job duties. During their fellowship period, fellows will be expected to generate a variety of communication pieces on food and agricultural issues. Communication activities that contribute to policy dialogue on food and agricultural sustainability are particularly encouraged, in keeping with the overall W.K.K.F's Food and Society initiative. (For more information visit the W.K.K.F website: www.foodandsociety.org.) Fellows can also emphasize the policy component of the fellowship through participation in policy forums or other relevant conferences (note: the fellowship does not provide travel support beyond fellowship training and organizational meetings). The audience for communication activities will often be consumers, but at times may be a narrower audience of policy-makers or other professionals. Fellowship recipients will be required to do a modest amount of travel in conjunction with the program, including participation in two multi-day training and orientation sessions. During their fellowship program, fellows can expect to have networking opportunities with other fellows in the program from across the country. Each fellow will have the opportunity to impact a broad range of other institutions and organizations through their communications activities. Application Guidelines Applications for the 2002 - 2004 Food and Society Policy Fellows program will be accepted starting April 1, 2002 and due by May 1, 2002. Please include a 2 - 3 page letter that describes any previous experience you have had in communications about food and agricultural issues. This letter should include communication ideas or goals you are interested in achieving during the fellowship. (Fellows will develop a formal work plan after going through initial training.) Stipends can range from $20,000 - $35,000 per year depending on work experience, current salary and expected time commitment (you may propose any level up to half-time). Your letter must detail the percent time you would expect to spend on fellowship activities, and the stipend level needed to support that percentage of your time (within the range of $20,000 - $35,000 per year). You may optionally request an additional $500 per year ($1000 total) to support office expenses you will incur during the fellowship (such as phone and mail). Please enclose a resume or some description of background and experience, two writing samples and a list of three references with contact information. Applications should be mailed to arrive by May 1, 2002 and should be sent to: Jefferson Agricultural Institute Attn: Selection Committee Chair 601 W. Nifong Blvd., Suite 1D Columbia, MO 65203 (office phone # to provide for overnight delivery services is 573-449-3518) Selection of fellows is scheduled to be completed by the end of June.
