Hi

We do indeed have patients who have had a THR on one side and a

resurfacing on the other.....there are no weight issues at all. Our

operated patients do say that they feel a lot better on the resuraced

side.

I have both THR 3.5 yrs ago, and resurf 20 months ago. THR is a

BIOMET MOM. Resurf Cormet 2K also MOM.

Well Life w/o arthritis pain is great. Initially I wanted to get a

resurf on 1st hip. Then I read about MOM articulations and how they

had a projected rate of 25 yrs. No Osteolysis like with plastic.

Also my surgeon at the time, like many others said resurfs are

undependable, blagh blagh blagh. Anyway the pain was too intense

and resurfs were not as common. So THR MOM sounded great to me.

Well here at 3 yrs plus. Seems as though my THR is loosening. I am

getting pain again. Still no where near what I had w / OA.

Anyway...My THR never felt as natural as resurf does. ROM never as

great. Surgeon stated life long restrictions. I started riding my

bike again last year unfortunately I took a ride a day ago I was in

pain for the past two days.

But I digress...in reference to the question of weight or balance.

There has been no issue in that area at all. If there were no

complications with my THR I would be back riding hour mountain bike

rides! Probably backpacking as well.

My resurf feels great. I only wish I had waited or done what ever

was necessary to get a resurf on my 1st hip. Not a lot I can do

about it now. I will probably wind up with a revision. Based on

what I have read and my pain which is mostly groin / glute areas

acetabular cup is the problem. I could go through the same with a

resurf.

However, could just as easily have been the femoral component,

still could. With resurf I have more bone to work with when

revision surgery is needed. And to quote the first Surgeon " They

all fail. "

One other thought I leave you with. I am 41 and in light of my

present experience with the probability of osteolysis onset in my 1st

prosthesis I would have held out a while longer on my second surgery.

There was no question on timing on the 1st. Pain level was too

intense. I can only hope that loosening once does necessarily mean

it will happen on a revision or on my wonderul resurfed hip.

If anyone has more info on loosening reoccurance (sp?) Or treatment

options please let me know.

Thanks and good luck with your decision.

Hi Mike,

I don't have any information to pass on but write to say I am sorry you are

in trouble with your THR.......... I guess it is best to hope that at worst

it is to do with the acetabular cup and I do hope it is resolved fairly

easily and quickly.......... i.e. doesn't need revision to the femur

part.........

Have you tried the other 2 lists mainly devoted to THR to ask your

question??
