Guest guest
Hi Bernadette; With regards to the OHIP premiums, this is back to the old system we used to have 20 years ago. The premiums will be based in income - those earning less than $20,000.00 a year pay nothing, while those in blocks of income pay amounts ranging from $300 and $900 per year. (the $900.00 premium is for those earning greater than $100, 000.00 per year = $75.00 a month) Premiums will not be graded upon by disorder or need for services. What Ohip will no longer cover is optometry visits (children under 18 are excluded) and chiropractic ad well as physiotherapy outside of the hospital setting (private clinics). I am one of the rare people who support the premium system - it's time healthcare dollars be put into the system, but I sincerely hope that this step back in time will be beneficial in the long run. I do see immediate problems though and it will be interesting to see if the plan changes over time. I know it will. Advocacy groups are already up in arms, and rightly so. In terms of insurance, you can get it - just likely term depending upon how you fill out the questionnaire. Because of your daughters age, there may be no health information to complete depending upon the company you go with. The insurance company might offer a term policy or a conditional whole life policy which means that you have to prove stable health over a period of time for them. Having a firm diagnosis may or may not help or hinder the case, you'd have to talk to the agent about that to see. I'd call a broker rather than an agency, because a broker will represent more than one company and will do the work for you and present you with options. About working - your daughter may just do great in a part-time work arrangement, or in a modified work environment. You just never do know. Hang in there.
