PHOENIX (AP) — A swarm of bees at a west Phoenix intersection sent

motorists and pedestrians fleeing and left one person hospitalized.

The swarm shut down the intersection of 43rd Avenue and Greenway Road

Wednesday evening.

Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Capt. Tony Mure tells The Arizona

Republic that a 42-year-old man was hospitalized in serious condition. Two

others

were treated by paramedics at the scene. Four horses and six dogs were also

stung.

Two other bee incidents were reported in Tolleson and Glendale on

Wednesday, killing one dog and stinging several people.

Bees frequently swarm in the springtime. Officials warn people to avoid

loud noises or wild movements that may disturb the bees.

Some people kick over rocks to find the metaphorical and actual scorpions and

tarantulas (your's truly included); some choose to annoy bees (g). It's just the

season for swarming.

A group of Texas legislators in the 70s invented the 'leave the state to avoid a

vote' actions that Wisconsin legislators did earlier this year. They were the

original 'Killer Bees'. The ignorance of one voter in a democracy

impairs the security of all. -- F. Kennedy, 1963
