I think I have finally figured out what "middle age" REALLY is. Tomorrow (well, probably today by the time anyone reads this) will be my 57th birthday. I cannot remember the last time anyone gave me a birthday present, made me a birthday dinner or surprised me with a birthday cake. Seems those things are reserved for the very young, where we delight in seeing their little eyes light up like the candles on their cake. Or the very old, where, out of guilt, we shower them with "aren't you glad you made it this far" birthdays and buy then pricey things, hoping that they will will them back to us in a few (short) years. So I am between both. Ergo, middle aged.

Got it.

Now I understand.
