Guest guest Posted January 31, 2002 Report Share Posted January 31, 2002 Secretariat, Commission for Labor ation Research Positions Available The Commission for Labor ation is an international body established under the North American Agreement on Labor ation (NAALC), a supplementary accord to NAFTA. The NAALC commits the three countries to protecting labor rights, improving working conditions and living standards, and promoting cooperation on labor issues across North America. The CLC Secretariat, located in Washington, D.C., is the administrative and research arm of the Commission. The CLC Secretariat is currently seeking candidates from Mexico, Canada or the United States for five research positions. The Positions Researchers at the Secretariat design, conduct and author comparative studies on labor and employment issues in North America. They may also be called upon to organize seminars, make conference presentations and undertake related tasks. The available positions are in the following fields: Economics (Labor Markets and International Trade). To conduct and/or coordinate comparative research on labor market trends and structures in North America, labor migration, the impact of continental integration on labor markets, and linkages between trade and labor standards. Strong statistical and econometric skills are essential for this position. Economics (Labor Market Institutions and Policy). To conduct and/or coordinate comparative research on North American labor market institutions (e.g., training and skills development systems, employment systems, work organization) and labor market and social policies. Labor and Employment Law. To conduct and/or coordinate comparative research on North American labor and employment laws (including collective labor law, employment standards, OH & S legislation, and employment discrimination and equal pay law) and on international labor law. Industrial Relations. To conduct and/or coordinate comparative research on labor-management relations in North America, including workplace change, labor-management partnerships, dispute resolution, collective bargaining, trade unionism, industrial conflict and transnational labor-management issues. Human Resources Management. To conduct and/or coordinate comparative research on human resources management in North America, including workplace safety, organizational innovation, productivity improvement, employee involvement, human resource management in multinational corporations, and transnational diffusion of best practices. Qualifications Applicants must hold an advanced degree in an appropriate discipline and have experience in designing, conducting and successfully completing research projects. Excellent communications skills (verbal and written) in one of the Secretariat's official languages (English, French and Spanish), as well as a functional knowledge of at least one of the other two languages, are a must. Candidates must be able to work both independently and as part of a team. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in international or comparative research in their field, multi- or interdisciplinary training, and experience working in a multilinguistic/multicultural setting. Appointment and Remuneration Appointments to the Secretariat are normally for an initial period of three years, with a possibility of extension for up to three additional years. Initial appointments of two years may be considered. Salaries (after tax) range from $40,000 to $65,000 US depending on experience and qualifications. An excellent benefits package is included.
