Bernie,

how old is Meaghan? Haley, my granddaughter, is 7. she needs some ring splints

now. My daughter hopes to be able to get some before long.

Cindy at the Silver Ring Splint company is really helpful in what type of splint

may be needed. My therapist and her are trying to come up with a splint or

combination of splints which will help two of my fingers, because of the sort of

unusual problem.

The end joint of the thumb by the nail is another one. it's really loose in all

directions so we're going to be trying different ones out to find the best one

to use.

I would think the thumb splint one would help her finger from dropping down. Has

she ever had this joint evaluated by a therapist, hand surgeon. or any other

type of doctor to find out the options she has?

In my case with middle thumb joints that bent back to a 90 degree angle, I wish

I'd had them surgically corrected years ago.

I wouldn't recommend others even go near this option or any surgical option

without LOTS of thought and info to back the decision.

Others with a bit less of a hypermobility problem have gone with the ring

splints for the middle joint with a lot of success. It's a decision I made after

lots of thought. so far it's the best thing I've ever done. My one thumb is

stronger than it's ever been and I'm thrilled with the results. the other is

still casted from the fusion less than 2 weeks ago.

As far as " popping " the joint....I did that all on my own....I mentioned it to

the doctor....he just grinned and said whatever helps it feel better....OH GEE

THANKS!

Finally I have some excellent doctors that actually care about how I'm coming

along. it's so nice to be the patient and not need to come up with all the

answers, but what I offer is taken seriously and considered. what they don't

know they research for the answers...

Good luck with Meaghan. :)

love, Cindy

Re: Very sore.........../Grace

Hi Grace,

You should probably get your shoulder looked at to be sure it's not

sitting out of joint, or partially out of joint.

Especially with all the pain you're having in that area.

And no, you're not the only with the problems re: deod and long

hair....

that's why I have short hair so it can air dry, or be blown dry in a

very short time.

I've usually been able to hold my shoulder up long enough to get the

doed. on, or if I can't get the left arm over enough to put it under

the right arm, I use the right hand--pays to have a little extra

flexibility doing that.

Used to be a time aching fingers could get relief from being popped, but

no more. Now they're really stiff and painful and also the joints are

swollen when I get up, or don't use them for a while. (arthrosis/

arthritis)

if I'd used silver ring splints and assistive devises years earlier it

would have helped to lessen the severity of some of this.

Also my hand and finger joints have loosened up a good deal more over

the years.

I hope you'll be able to get into the study at NIH. It would help your

doctors understand the importance of doing things now-not wait until

your joints are shot to start....like mine did.

The last two years I've had new doctors--that's why so many things are

being taken care of now. They were ignored for YEARS! So the damage is

far greater.

good luck on getting accepted!

Love,

Cindyh
