Guest guest
Orthostatic Intolerance and Vertigo Vertigo is not the same thing as Orthostatic Intolerance (OI). And not all symptoms are from ME/CFS. Orthostatic Intolerance What is Orthostatic Intolerance... Demographics... Symptoms and Signs... Heterogenity Many diagnoses have been given to such patients (Table 1). There are several features shared by these various entities, although in some of them, there appear to be abnormalities that are unrelated to the cardiovascular effects of the disorder. Table 1. Names Sometimes Used for Orthostatic Intolerance Syndromes Hyperadrenergic orthostatic hypotension Partial dysautonomia Orthostatic tachycardia syndrome Sympathicotonic orthostatic hypotension Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) Mitral valve prolapse syndrome Postural tachycardia syndrome Soldier's heart Hyperadrenergic postural hypotension Vasoregulatory asthenia Sympathotonic orthostatic hypotension Neurocirculatory asthenia Hyperdynamic beta-adrenergic state Irritable heart Idiopathic hypovolemia Orthostatic anemia Etiology... Pathophysiology... Long-Term Outlook for Patients... Uncertainties... Prospectus... Therapy... http://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/gcrc/adc/oi.html Exercises might ease vertigo symptoms... A few simple head-turning exercises appear to be able to relieve the stomach-churning sensation of spinning and whirling that occurs when the head is suddenly turned... 95 percent of people who did the " modified Epley " procedure had no more symptoms. The exercise, developed by Portland, Ore., physician Epley, requires patients to lie on their backs and tilt their heads to one side for 30 seconds, then to the other side for 30 seconds. They then turn their bodies on that same side without moving their head, holding that position for 30 more seconds before sitting up... A video showing the maneuver is available on the Neurology journal Web site, http://www.neurology.org>www.neurology.org. Go to the July 13, 2004, issue, then to the " Brief Communications " section.
