Guest guest
Hi, Deanna, Yes, I have experienced that sudden swelling in a finger joint thing, many times. My old Rheumy told me it goes with RA and SLE, and that it has no known origin. The best treatment is hot soaks, and ice alternating. Also, try not to use the finger for a few days, if possible. Do not splint it, though, as that can make it "freeze" up and be much more difficult to fix. My thumbs are my usual culprits, although my second and third fingers have done it, too. Good luck, honey. Loving hugs, MM
Guest guest
I had that when I was first diagnosed. I couldn't press the elevator button, because it felt as if though my fingers were broken. You couldn't see any of my joints at all on my hands and they were very painful, yet I did not swell elsewhere at that time. Those were one of my first symptoms. They went away after my first dosages of treatments. Now and then I only get a taste of it, but nothing close to what it was then. Mojo Does anyone experience... Good morning all, Hope this finds everyone feeling well, or at least pain free. I have a question for you all out there. Has anyone ever experienced swelling in their knuckles to the point where when you go to bend a finger it hurts as if you either sprained it or sometimes feel like it’s broken? I woke up several days ago with the ring finger knuckle swollen and tender, I just figured it was my fibro acting up because of our weather but as the days continue it seems to feel worse – now today I can barely move my finger, even straightening it hurts. The other knuckles don’t hurt and do not seem swollen and I know I didn’t fall or knock it or anything so I was just curious if this has happened to any of you and if so what did you do for it. I’m Clueless as to what to do with this situation… Thank you in advance for your responses… Hugs, Deanna "The LUPIES Store" Come check out our store...http://www.cafepress.com/thelupies"The LUPIES Web Page"http://www.itzarion.com/lupusgroup.html"The LUPIES online photo albums!" Guest guest
Deanna, I don't get the swelling like that but my sister does big time. Like you, she can't figure out if it is her fibro or lupus. Her rheumy dorsn't seem to know either. a

Guest guest
I experienced what sounds like the same. Before I was diagnosed I had similar symtpoms, and now sometimes too. I never saw actual swelling but I would wake up from day to day and think that I had broken a bone, sprained an ankle etc. It was so weird, and very painful. I had to splint my own wrist to keep it from any movement. I rarely experience that now. But, I went through months of constant dull aching in my hands. That is now gone. I hope this helps. Guest guest
Deanna, I have a real problem with hands swelling. I've had it for many years. I thought at first it was carpal tunnel, but that wasn't it. This was before I knew I had lupus. The best I can figure out is that a nerve in my arm gets inflamed (for me it's my ulnar nerve). Then I tend to retain water in my joints as well (which is why my knees, ankles, etc.) swell as well. After seeing orthopedic surgeons and neurologists, the most I ever got out of it was to take ibuprofen - great, huh. It helps some. I've also found that some massage is also helpful - it gets the blood flowing and releases trapped and swollen nerves. I massage my hands and all the way up my arm and into my shoulder. I also try to keep my arm straight, don't sleep on it, and keep it elevated when possible. I also have worse problems if my hands get too hot or too cold. You may not have the same problems as I do, but you could try those things. Take care, Tana > Good morning all, > Hope this finds everyone feeling well, or at least pain free. > I have a question for you all out there. Guest guest
Hi Deanna, I was diagnosed with Lupus in January and since then I have had trouble with my knuck on my right hand the first finger and sometimes the second finger. It feels swollen and yes kind of like a sprain although it hasn't gotten bad enough to not be able to move it. I have an appointment in August to see a rheumatologist and plan to ask him about it. If you find out something before then let me know I would like to understand what it is that causes this. I keep worrying whether it will get worse and if I won't be able to use my hand eventually since it is my right hand which is my prominent one I would hate to have that happen. Sorry I can't give you any information but I hope you feel better soon!
