Farmworkers work hard to harvest the fruits and vegetables we eat yet

are continually one of the most underpaid and mistreated laborers in the

U.S. The majority of the farmworking population is foreign born and

undocumented. Most live below the poverty line and live in substandard

housing. Agriculture is one of the most dangerous occupations

nationally yet farmworkers are exempt from many workplace safety laws.

Farmworkers are fighting for a living wage, job security, benefits, the

right to organize and bargain with their employers without fear of

retaliation. Please join the fight for farmworker justice, by attending

SAF's Sowing Seeds for Change Symposium!

About the Symposium

The Sowing Seeds for Change Symposium is Student Action with

Farmworker's national conference with a local focus. It affords the

opportunity for campus activists, farmworkers and farmworker

organizations from South Carolina and the surrounding region to come

together, share resources and strategies for

farmworker advocacy and build a strong network of farmworker justice

advocates.

What will happen?

* Workshops on hot topics like Black/Latino alliance, immigration, the

DREAM Act, H2A and other guestworker programs, health issues, student

organizing, boycott updates, sustainable agriculture and more!

* National and local speakers

* Reception for SAF's Recollections of Home/Recuerdos de mi Tierra

Documentary Exhibit on farmworkers

* Information Fair featuring local and national organizations who

support farmworker justice

* Entertainment

* Silent Art Auction

* Workshops in Spanish and English, interpreters available

Information Fair

An Information Fair will be held Saturday, November 8th. Organizations

will set up tables to distribute information and dialogue with

participants. If you are interested in having a table, please fill out

the Info Table Reservation Form and mail it with a check made out to SAF

for $45. Info tables are free to students.

Who should attend?

College and high school students and family members, faculty, healthcare

providers, farmworker advocates, farmworkers, community members,

supporters and others who are interested in learning more about issues

affecting farmworkers nationally and in the local region where the

conference is held.

Location: All workshops will take place on the campus of USC in

House; plenary sessions will be held in House, Ballroom C.

Hotel

Holiday Inn Coliseum at USC has blocked some rooms off for participants

and given a rate of $75 plus tax for a double room. Reservations can be

made by calling 803-799-7800 or 1-800-holiday. Ask for the Sowing

Seeds for Change rate for the event dates. You may reference Market

Segment Code: 2SSC. Reservations must be guaranteed by a Master

Account, credit card, or advance deposit received 30 days prior to

arrival. Reservations must be canceled 24 hours prior to arrival. Hotel

check-in time is after 3pm on the day of arrival. Checkout time is

before 12noon on the day of departure.

Free Housing

Free housing with students/ community members is limited but available

to low-income students, farmworkers and other individuals on a first

come, first serve basis.
